Carlos Arthur Thiré
Carlos Arthur Thiré (Rio de Janeiro, October 9, 1917 - Rio de Janeiro, March 11, 1963) was a Brazilian set designer, filmmaker, costume designer, painter and comics artist. He was married to actress Tônia Carrero and father of actor Cecil Thiré. He began his career as an illustrator in the 1930s at the newspaper ''A Noite'', having been nominated to this work by Júlio César de Mello e Souza, a family friend. Thiré created the comics strip Raffles, whose comic books were published by Adolfo Aizen at Grande Consórcio de Suplementos Nacionais publishing house. He also created comics for the magazine '' O Tico-Tico'', but, around the 1940s, he left comics to focus on his work as an actor and, later, in 1949, as a set designer, screenwriter and director at Companhia Cinematográfica Vera Cruz. Maria Antonieta Portocarrero Thedim ( née de Farias; 23 August 1922 – 3 March 2018), known professionally as Tônia Carrero, was a Brazilian actress. Early life Carrero was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Career She made her theater debut at the Brazilian Theater of Comedy (TBC) in São Paulo, with the play ''Um Deus Dormiu Lá em Casa,'' opposite actor Paulo Autran. Cecil Thiré
Cecil Aldary Portocarrero Thiré (28 May 1943 – 9 October 2020) was a Brazilian television, film and stage actor, and director. Life and career Thiré was born in Rio de Janeiro, the only son of actress Tônia Carrero and artist Carlos Arthur Thiré. He was named after his grandfather Cecil Thiré, a mathematics teacher at Colégio Pedro II and textbook writer. At the age of 17, he studied acting with Adolfo Celi and worked intensely in theater in the 1960s. At age 18, he had his first professional job, as assistant director to Ruy Guerra in ''Os Fuzis''. ''A Noite'' (English: The Night) was a Brazilian newspaper based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was published daily from 18 July 1911 to 27 December 1957 when it stopped publication. Its headquarters, which is located at Praça Mauá in the Central Zone, was erected in the late 1920s. Júlio César de Mello e Souza ( Rio de Janeiro, May 6, 1895 – Recife, June 18, 1974), was a Brazilian writer and mathematics teacher. He was well known in Brazil and abroad by his books on recreational mathematics, most of them published under the pen names of Malba Tahan and Breno de Alencar Bianco. He wrote 69 novels and 51 books of mathematics and other subjects, with over than two million books sold by 1995. His most famous work, '' The Man Who Counted'', saw its 54th printing in 2001. Adolfo Aizen (Ekaterinoslav, June 10, 1907 – Rio de Janeiro, May 10, 1991) was a Russian Empire-born Brazilian journalist and editor. He grew up in Salvador, moving to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 15. In Rio, he worked at the publisher O Malho, responsible for the magazine '' O Tico-Tico'', the first magazine to publish comics in Brazil. In 1945, Aizen founded Editora Brasil-América Limitada (EBAL), which would become the most important Brazilian comic book publishing house until the 1980s (the publisher was closed in 1995), being responsible for publishing comics like Superman, Batman and Prince Valiant, among others. ''O Tico-Tico'' was a weekly Brazilian children's magazine, published between 1905 and 1977. It was the first magazine to publish comics in Brazil. Companhia Cinematográfica Vera Cruz was an important Brazilian film studio founded in 1949 and closed in 1954. Master of National Comics ( pt-BR, Mestre do Quadrinho Nacional) is one of the categories of Prêmio Angelo Agostini, the most traditional Brazilian award dedicated to comics that has been held since 1985 by Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP). History The "Master of National Comics" category has been part of Prêmio Angelo Agostini since its first edition, in 1985. It is aimed to reward artists who have been dedicated to Brazilian comics for at least 25 years. The four honorees of this first edition were chosen by AQC-ESP board. The following year, the winners were elected by open vote for members of AQC-ESP and comics artists associations from other Brazilian states (and, later, for any interested person, whether comics professionals or readers).
