Carlo Catani
Carlo Giorgio Domenico Enrico Catani (22 April 1852 – 20 July 1918) was a civil engineer who worked in Australia for the Victorian Government for the majority of his career. He oversaw many projects, including: *the draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup swamp *widening and improvement of the Yarra River upstream from Princes Bridge, Alexandra Avenue and the laying out and planting of the Alexandra Gardens *roads to Arthurs Seat and to Mount Donna Buang *the Elwood Canal *Murray River levees ( Strathmerton district) *Lake Catani on Mount Buffalo *reclamation and the layout of the St Kilda foreshore. St Kilda Beach, Victoria
St Kilda Beach is a beach located in St Kilda, Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia, south from the Melbourne city centre. It is Melbourne's most famous beach. The beach is a sandy beach about long between St Kilda Marina and St Kilda Harbour along Jacka Boulevard and St Kilda Esplanade. It is located at the north-east corner of Port Phillip and is protected from ocean swell, though still affected by strong westerly winds. Mount Buffalo National Park
The Mount Buffalo National Park is a national park in the alpine region of Victoria, Australia. The national park is located approximately northeast of Melbourne in the Australian Alps. Within the national park is Mount Buffalo, a moderately high mountain plateau, with an elevation of above sea level. On 4 November 1898 an area of was reserved around the plateau and Eurobin Falls as Mount Buffalo National Park, making it one of the oldest national parks in Australia. Catani, Victoria
Catani is a bounded rural locality in Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. Catani recorded a population of 297 at the 2021 census. History The town was named after Carlo Catani, a civil engineer who worked on the draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup Swamp. Catani Post Office opened on 2 April 1923 and closed in 1981 after Bernadette Miles left. Today Catani has an Australian Rules football team playing in the Ellinbank & District Football League. Catani is also host to the Gippsland Pleasure Harness Society, a branch of the Australian Carriage Driving Society. Members of the club meet at the Recreational Reserve on the third Sunday of each month to practice and participate in activities with their horses, ponies and donkeys. Lake Catani
Lake Catani is an artificial lake in the Mount Buffalo National Park in Victoria, Australia. It was constructed in 1910 under the supervision and probably design of the Victorian Public Works engineer, Carlo Catani, to provide recreational facilities in the newly opened winter resort. The Mount Buffalo National Park was established in 1898 with a 1166 hectare temporary reserve centred on the Eurobin Falls. In 1908 the area was increased to 9240 hectares and became permanent national park reserve. Lake Catani was completed in 1910 by construction of a mass concrete arched dam across Eurobin Creek at Haunted Gorge. The contract was let in 1908 for 2355 pounds. The dam blocked what was then known as the 'Underground River' and flooded Long Plain, in the process also covering an Aboriginal camp site. Koo Wee Rup, Victoria
Koo Wee Rup is a town and satellite suburb in Victoria, Australia, 63 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. Built on former marshland now converted to market gardens, Koo Wee Rup recorded a population of 4,047 at the 2021 census. Prior to December 1994 the suburb was part of the Shire of Cranbourne. Strathmerton is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the Shire of Moira local government area on the Murray Valley Highway and Goulburn Valley Highway, about west of Cobram. At the , Strathmerton had a population of 1072. History Strathmerton Post Office opened on 1 September 1879. In 1888 on the arrival of the railway a Strathmerton Township Post Office opened near the station. In 1891 this was renamed Strathmerton. The local railway station was opened on the railway to Cobram in 1888, with the line to Tocumwal opened in 1905. The last regular passenger service was in 1993.
