Carlile Aylmer Macartney
Carlile Aylmer Macartney FBA (1895–1978) was a British academic specialising in the history and politics of East-Central Europe and in particular the history of Austria and Hungary. He was also a supporter of Hungarian interests and causes in the United Kingdom. Career His education included time at Winchester College (where he was a scholar) and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Macartney was a research fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. From 1936 to 1946 he was in charge of the Hungarian section of the Foreign Office Research Department. From 1951 to 1957 he held the Chair of International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Macartney was a corresponding member of the Austrian and Hungarian academies, and in 1965 he became a member of the British Academy. In 1974, Macartney was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria. Carlile Henry Hayes Macartney
Carlile Henry Hayes Macartney (1842–1924) was a British painter and Orientalist, noted for his portraits. Life and career Macartney was born on 3 March 1842 to Maxwell Macartney, a doctor, and Maxwell's first wife Emily Eliza Hayes. He was a student at Clare College, graduating in 1866. As well as a painter Macartney was an orientalist academic, producing several English versions of oriental text and a barrister at the Inner Temple. Macartney, along with his half brother, Sir Mervyn Macartney, were amongst the founders of the Art Workers' Guild in 1884. Macartney lived at Foxholds House, Thatcham which was designed by Sir Mervyn Macartney in 1895, and is now home to the regional office of English Nature. Carlile Pollock Patterson
Carlile Pollock Patterson (August 24, 1816 – August 15, 1881) was the fourth superintendent of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. He was born in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, the son of Commodore Daniel Todd Patterson. He was appointed a midshipman in the United States Navy in 1830. He studied Civil Engineering at Georgetown College, graduating in 1838, and returned to the Navy, assigned to work with the U.S. Coast Survey. He left the Navy in 1853 and captained mail steamers in the Pacific Ocean. In 1861, as a civilian, he was appointed as Hydrographic Inspector of the U.S. Coast Survey. In 1874, he was made Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey (renamed the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1878), a position he held until his death.
