Lieutenant General Carl Nils Gabriel Ã…rmann (24 August 1894 – 21 April 1988) was a Swedish Army officer and modern pentathlete. He competed at the 1924 Summer Olympics and finished tenth. Early life Ã…rmann was born on 24 August 1894 in Stora Mellösa, Sweden, the son of estate owner Nils Ã…rmann and his wife Alva (née Lange). He passed ''studentexamen'' in Örebro in 1913. Career Military career Ã…rmann was commissioned as an officer in 1915 with the rank of second lieutenant and was assigned to Uppland Artillery Regiment (A 5). He completed the higher course at the Artillery and Engineering College from 1918 to 1920 and was captain of the General Staff in 1926. Skövde () is a locality and urban centre in Skövde Municipality and Västra Götaland County, in the Västergötland (Western Gothland region) in central Southern Sweden. Skövde is situated some 150 km northeast of Gothenburg, between Sweden's two largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern. The Royal Order of the Sword (officially: ''Royal Order of the Sword''; Swedish: ''Kungliga Svärdsorden'') is a Swedish order of chivalry and military decoration created by King Frederick I of Sweden on February 23, 1748, together with the Order of the Seraphim and the Order of the Polar Star. The motto of the order is in Latin: ''Pro Patria'' (which means "For Fatherland"). Awarded to officers, and originally intended as an award for bravery and particularly long or useful service, it eventually became a more or less obligatory award for military officers after a certain number of years in service. Major (Maj) ( sv, Major, Mj) is a field grade military officer rank in the Swedish Armed Forces, above the rank of captain and below the rank of lieutenant colonel. It is equivalent to the naval rank of lieutenant commander in the Swedish Navy. History The rank of major was introduced in the middle of the 16th century in the Spanish and German armies, and its holders were assigned to the regimental commander.
