Carl Stenger
Carl Stenger (26 November 1905 – 29 June 1982) was a German politician and trade union leader. Stenger grew up in Frankfurt and, at the age of fifteen, became a locksmith, and joined the German Metal Workers' Union. In 1924, he moved to work for the Reichspost, and joined the German Transport Workers' Union. Following World War II, Stenger focused on reconstructing the trade union movement in West Germany, becoming chair of the Association of German Postal Unions. In 1949, he chaired the founding conference of the German Postal Union (DPG), then became its first leader. He also won election to the executive of the Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International, and from 1960 to 1966 served as its president. Ernst Breit
Ernst Breit (20 August 1924 – 22 February 2013) was a German trade union leader. Born in Rickelshof, Breit joined the Reichspost as a trainee inspector in 1941, but the following year was conscripted into the army. He later became a prisoner of war, but at the end of World War II was released and returned to the post office, working in Heide. He joined the German Postal Union (DPG), becoming part of his local works council. In 1952, he joined the executive committee of the Kiel district of the DPG, and from 1953 to 1959 served as its chair, while also serving on the union's national executive committee. In 1956, Breit was promoted to run the post office in Neustadt, then from 1959 he ran the personnel department at the Federal Post Office. In 1971 he became the national chair of the DPG, and the following year was also elected to the executive of the Postal, Telegraph and Telephone International (PTTI), and as deputy chair of the Board of the Federal Post. Ron Smith (trade Unionist)
Ron Smith CBE (15 July 1915 – 20 October 1999) was a British trade unionist. Born in North London, Smith studied with the Workers' Educational Association, following his father into a job delivering mail, and also becoming active in the Labour Party and the Union of Post Office Workers. William Norton
William Joseph Norton (2 November 1900 – 4 December 1963) was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Tánaiste from 1948 to 1951 and from 1954 to 1957, Leader of the Labour Party from 1932 to 1960, Minister for Social Welfare from 1948 to 1951 and Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1954 to 1957. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1926 to 1927 and from 1932 to 1961. Norton was born in Dublin in 1900. He joined the postal service in 1916. By 1920, he was a prominent member of the Irish Postal Union and the wider trade union movement in Ireland. From 1924 to 1957, he served as Secretary of the Post Office Workers' Union. German Postal Union
The German Postal Union (german: Deutsche Postgewerkschaft, DPG) was a trade union representing postal workers in Germany. The union was founded at a conference held on 29 and 30 June 1949, in Stuttgart. It initially had 140,000 members, the vast majority working for the Deutsche Bundespost. In October 1949, the union became a founder member of the German Trade Union Confederation. In March 1990, the a German Postal Union East was founded, to cover East Germany, then in November this merged into the main union, with about 100,000 workers for the Deutsche Post of the GDR joining. By 1998, the union had 474,094 members. Between 1989 and 1994, the Deutsche Bundespost was privatised, against the objections of the DPG.
