Carl O. Sherman Sr.
Carl O. Sherman Sr. (born June 13, 1966) is an American politician in Texas. A Democrat, he represents District 109 in the Texas House of Representatives. He served as mayor of DeSoto, Texas. Political career Sherman was elected mayor of DeSoto, Texas in May 2010, after having served as mayor pro tem in 2008 and 2009. He was re-elected in 2013. Sherman became the City Manager of Ferris, Texas in July 2015. He resigned from that position in August 2016, and became the chief administrative officer of Hutchins, Texas in September of that year. Texas legislature In 2018, Sherman ran for election to represent District 109 in the Texas House of Representatives, to replace former representative Helen Giddings, who had decided to retire. In a four-way Democratic primary, he advanced to a runoff against Deshaundra Lockhart Jones, which he won. He was the only candidate on the ballot in the general election. Helen Giddings
Helen Giddings (born April 21, 1945) is an American businesswoman and former politician who served as a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1993 until January 2019. She sat on the House committees of Appropriations, Calendars, and State Affair. Early life and work Giddings attended the University of Texas at Arlington. She previously served as an executive with Sears, Roebuck & Company, and was responsible for human resources in 11 states. In 1989, she founded , Inc., a specialty concessions company, of which she is president. A former board chairman of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, in the 1980s, as Vice-Chair of the Dallas Transit Board, her mediation skills were employed to end a bus driver strike. Ellis County African American Hall Of Fame Museum And Library
The Ellis County African American Hall of Fame Museum and Library was established to recognize and tell the stories of African Americans with ties to the city of Waxahachie, Texas. The museum and library are housed in a historic fraternal building in Waxahachie, Texas. The building was built in 1926 and housed a lodge of the Colored Knights of Pythias. The building was listed as endangered before being restored and receiving funding for roof work. The museum and library, which opened in 2016, are at 441 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Jamal Rasheed, CEO and President of the Hall of Fame, has spoken about the area’s Prince Hall Cemetery, efforts to preserve it and the veterans buried there. Single-family Zoning
Single-family zoning is a type of planning restriction applied to certain residential zones in the United States and Canada in order to restrict development to only allow single-family detached homes. It disallows townhomes, duplexes, and multi-family housing (apartments) from being built on any plot of land with this zoning designation. It is a form of exclusionary zoning, and was created as a way to keep minorities out of white neighborhoods. It both increases the cost of housing units and decreases the supply. In many United States cities, 75% of land zoned for residential uses is zoned single-family. Recently, many cities across the nation have started looking at reforming their land-use regulations, particularly single-family zoning, in attempts to solve their housing shortages and reduce the racial inequities which arise from housing segregation. Hutchins, Texas
Hutchins is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. Its population was 5,338 at the 2010 census. History The area was first inhabited by families around 1860 as a trading place for immigrants who settled along the west bank of the Trinity River and new arrivals who crossed the Trinity at Dowd's Ferry from the east. The town received its name from railroad developer William J. Hutchins, who was then president and general manager of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC). The railway was completed through Hutchins in 1872. That same year a post office opened in the community. The population of Hutchins grew to around 250 residents in 1884 and topped 300 by 1890. That figure declined slightly to 204 in 1904, but had risen to 500 in 1926. Hutchins was officially incorporated in 1945.
