Background Froch was coming off a win against Jean Pascal for the vacant World Boxing Council, WBC title whilst Jermain Taylor had only recently stepped up to super-middleweight and was also coming off a win, beating Jeff Lacy in a title eliminator. Froch was ranked lower in the Ring Magazine rankings despite being the champion and was fighting in the United States for only the second time in his career. Carl Martin Froch, (born 2 July 1977) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 2002 to 2014, and has since worked as a boxing analyst and commentator. He held multiple super-middleweight world championships, including the World Boxing Council, WBC title twice between 2008 and 2011, the International Boxing Federation, IBF title from 2012 to 2015, and the WBA (Unified) title from 2013 to 2015. At regional level he held the British Boxing Board of Control, British, Commonwealth Boxing Council, Commonwealth, and British Boxing Board of Control, English super-middleweight titles, and won the Lonsdale Belt in 2006. As an amateur boxing, amateur in the middleweight division, Froch won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships, 2001 World Championships, and the England Boxing, ABA title twice.
