Carl Anwandter
Carlos Anwandter (1 April 1801, in Luckenwalde, Prussia – 10 July 1889, in Valdivia, Chile) was a German political exile who emigrated to Valdivia, Chile in 1850 after participating in the Revolutions of 1848. Biography He migrated to Valdivia in 1850, the leader of the first contingent of German colonists sent by Philippi. In 1851 founded the Anwandter brewery in Isla Teja. Among other things in Valdivia founded the first volunteer fire company "Germania" (1 March 1852), the German Club (1853) and the German School (1858) which now bears his name (German Institute Carlos Anwandter), being its first Director. German Colonization Of Valdivia, Osorno And Llanquihue
From 1850 to 1875, some 6,000 German immigrants settled in the region around Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue in Southern Chile as part of a state-led colonization scheme. Some of these immigrants had left Europe in the aftermath of the German revolutions of 1848–49. They brought skills and assets as artisans, farmers and merchants to Chile, contributing to the nascent country's economic and industrial development. The German colonization of Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue is considered the first of three waves of German settlement in Chile, the second lasting from 1882 to 1914 and the third from 1918 onward. Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter
Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter (Deutsche Schule Karl Anwandter) also known as Colegio Alemán de Valdivia or Deutsche Schule Valdivia (DS or DSV) is a private school, in Valdivia and the oldest German school in Chile. The school was founded in 1858 by Carlos Anwandter to serve the German community in Isla Teja. The school is bilingual and receives money from the government of Germany (formerly Western Germany) depending on how many students approve the DSH German language test. Valdivia (; Mapuche: Ainil) is a city and commune in southern Chile, administered by the Municipality of Valdivia. The city is named after its founder Pedro de Valdivia and is located at the confluence of the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, and Cau-Cau Rivers, approximately east of the coastal towns of Corral and Niebla. Luckenwalde (; Upper and dsb, Łukowc) is the capital of the Teltow-Fläming district in the German state of Brandenburg. It is situated on the Nuthe river north of the Fläming Heath, at the eastern rim of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park, about south of Berlin. Isla Teja
Teja island (Spanish ''isla Teja'') is an island in the city of Valdivia, Chile, surrounded by three rivers: Cau-Cau River, Cau-Cau river to the north, Cruces River, Cruces river to the west and Valdivia River, Valdivia river to the southeast. Prior to the mid-19th century the island was known as ''isla Valenzuela'' after Francisco de Valenzuela, an encomendero that settled there in 1552. In the second half of the 19th century the island became known for its roof tiles, roof tile (Spanish: ''teja'') and brick factory, hence the name ''isla Teja''. Bernhard Eunom Philippi
Bernhard Eunom Philippi (September 19, 1811, in Charlottenburg – September 6, 1852) was a German naturalist, explorer and colonization agent for Chile. He played an important role in the Chilean colonization of the Strait of Magellan and the German colonization of Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue. Biography His father was Johann Wilhelm Eberhard Philippi and his mother Maria Anna Krumwiede. In 1818 the family moved to Switzerland, where Rudolph and his brother Bernhard entered the school of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. Their brother Federico Philippi studied natural sciences and languages. Bernhard Philippi continued his education at the Technical College of Berlin between 1822 and 1830. He did nautical studies on a fellowship at the port of Danzig from 1831 to 1835. Philippi traveled to South America, where he settled in Ancud, Chile in 1838.
