Carl Allen (tailback)
Carl Blanchard Allen (June 25, 1920 – November 7, 2008) was an American football player who played at the tailback position on both offense and defense. He played college football for Oklahoma City in 1946 and 1947 and professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. Early years A native of Haskell, Oklahoma, he attended Magnolia High School in Arkansas. College football and military service Allen played one season of college football at Ouachita Baptist University before being called into military service during World War II. After the war, he played at the tailback position for Oklahoma City University and led the 1946 and 1947 Oklahoma City football teams to records of 10–1 and 7–3. Halfback (American Football)
A halfback (HB) is an offensive position in American football, whose duties involve lining up in the offensive backfield and carrying the ball on most rushing plays, i.e. a running back. When the principal ball carrier lines up deep in the backfield, and especially when that player is placed behind another player (usually a blocking back), as in the I formation, that player is instead referred to as a tailback. Sometimes the halfback can catch the ball from the backfield on short passing plays as they are an eligible receiver. Occasionally, they line up as additional wide receivers. Brooklyn Dodgers (AAFC) Players
The Brooklyn Dodgers were a Major League Baseball team founded in 1884 as a member of the American Association before joining the National League in 1890. They remained in Brooklyn until 1957, after which the club moved to Los Angeles, California, where it continues its history as the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team moved west at the same time as its longtime rival, the New York Giants, relocated to San Francisco in northern California as the San Francisco Giants. New York Yankees (AAFC)
The New York Yankees were a professional American football team that played in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946 to 1949. The team played in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and often played in front of sold-out crowds . They were owned by Dan Topping, who transferred the team from the NFL Brooklyn Dodgers, retaining many of the same players. The team's coach was Ray Flaherty, who had coached the Washington Redskins in the early 1940s. Former NFL player Jim Barber served as an assistant coach under Flaherty. The Yankees appeared in the 1946 AAFC championship game, but lost to the Cleveland Browns by a score of 14–9. The same two teams appeared in the championship game the following year, with the Browns winning again 14–3. Before the 1949 season, the Brooklyn Dodgers football team folded and merged into the Yankees, which became the Brooklyn-New York Yankees, but this was the final season of the AAFC, which was then absorbed by the NFL. All-America Football Conference
The All-America Football Conference (AAFC) was a professional American football league that challenged the established National Football League (NFL) from 1946 to 1949. One of the NFL's most formidable challengers, the AAFC attracted many of the nation's best players, and introduced many lasting innovations to the game. However, the AAFC was ultimately unable to sustain itself in competition with the NFL. After it folded, three of its teams were admitted to the NFL: the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns and the original Baltimore Colts (not to be confused with the later Baltimore Colts team, now the Indianapolis Colts). The AAFC was the second American professional football league (the first being the third American Football League of 1940–1941) to have its teams play in a double round robin format in the regular season: each team had a home game and an away game with each of the other AAFC teams. Bo Rowland
John Howell "Bo" Rowland (March 20, 1903 – September 23, 1964) was an American football player and coach of football and basketball. He served as the head football coach at Henderson-Brown College—now Henderson State University (1925–1930), Ouachita Baptist University (1931), The Citadel (1940–1942), Oklahoma City University (1946–1947), and George Washington University (1948–1951), compiling a career college football coaching record of 90–47–7. Rowland was also the head basketball coach at Henderson-Brown from 1925 to 1931 and at Cornell University from 1936 to 1938, tallying a career college basketball coaching mark of 40–58.
