Carentan-les-Marais
Carentan-les-Marais () is a commune in the department of Manche, northwestern France. Geography Carentan-les-Marais is located in the middle of vast marsh remediated and transformed into rich meadows, at the confluence of the Taute and the Douve. The city, at the gateway to the Cotentin Peninsula and the Bay of Veys, is at the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Cotentin and Bessin marshes. Transport The city has a railway station on the Paris–Cherbourg line and is crossed by the RN 13 and RN 174. It is served by public transport by bus (Manéo) via the line 001 Cherbourg-Octeville - Valognes - Carentan - Saint-Lo. Its port is connected to the sea by a canal. Toponymy The name of the commune refers to the marshes of Carentan. Robert Wright and Ken Moore of the 101st Airborne treated a mix of 80 injured American and German wounded soldiers and a child. Blood stains are still visible on the pews. Carentan
Carentan () is a small rural town near the north-eastern base of the French Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy in north-western France, with a population of about 6,000. It is a former commune in the Manche department. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Carentan-les-Marais. The town was a strategic early goal of the World War II landings as capturing the town was necessary to link the lodgements at Utah and Omaha beaches which were divided by the Douve river estuary (nearby fields were flooded by the Germans up to the town's outskirts). The town was also needed as an intermediate staging position for the capture of the cities of Cherbourg and Octeville, with the critically important port facilities in Cherbourg. Brucheville
Brucheville () is a former commune in the Manche department in Normandy in northwestern France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the commune Carentan-les-Marais. It is located at the south east corner of the Cherbourg peninsula, about 90 km east of Caen. World War II After the liberation of the area by Allied Forces in 1944, engineers of the Ninth Air Force IX Engineering Command began construction of a combat Advanced Landing Ground outside of the town. Declared operational on 2 August, the airfield was designated as " A-16", it was used by the 36th Fighter Group which flew P-47 Thunderbolts until late August when the unit moved into Central France.
