Carel Van Hien
Carel Hendrik David van Hien (born 20 September 1833 – 30 June 1864) was a Dutch colonial administrator, who made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast and who became interim governor during the European leave of governor Henri Alexander Elias on 12 March 1864. Van Hien only shortly served as interim governor, as he fell ill in June 1864 and left on sick leave to Europe on 14 June 1864. Van Hien did not survive his repatriation and died on board the steamship ''MacGregor Laird'' off Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Personal life Carel van Hien fathered at least three children on the Gold Coast during his service there. With Elizabeth Essuman, sister of Willem Essuman Pietersen, he begot Henry van Hien, who later became a nationalist leader on the Gold Coast. William III Of The Netherlands
William III (Dutch: ''Willem Alexander Paul Frederik Lodewijk''; English: ''William Alexander Paul Frederick Louis''; 19 February 1817 – 23 November 1890) was King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1849 until his death in 1890. He was also the Duke of Limburg from 1849 until the abolition of the duchy in 1866. William was the son of King William II and Anna Pavlovna of Russia. Henri Alexander Elias
Henri Alexander Elias (born 21 March 1829 – 26 February 1903) was a Dutch colonial administrator, who served as governor of the Dutch Gold Coast. Biography Henri Alexander Elias was born in Batavia, Dutch East Indies to Burchard Joan Elias, a civil servant in the colonial government of the Dutch East Indies who later became governor of the Dutch West Indies, and Cornelia Dorothea Adelheid Scholten van Aschat, a housemaid originally from Amsterdam. Both his parents stem from prominent Dutch patrician families. Shortly after his mother died on 30 April 1836, Henri Alexander moved from the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands, together with his father and his brother Burchard. Both Henri Alexander and his brother Burchard were enrolled at the private boarding school of Simon van Moock in Delft. Hendrik Doijer Jzn (born 14 September 1830 – 13 April 1906) was a Dutch politician, who first made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast and who became interim governor during the European leave of governor Henri Alexander Elias on 13 June 1864, upon the death of his interim predecessor Carel van Hien. He later became mayor of Zoeterwoude and Woerden. Biography Doijer was born in Amsterdam to painter Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer and Petronella Evekink. The Dutch Gold Coast or Dutch Guinea, officially Dutch possessions on the Coast of Guinea (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Bezittingen ter Kuste van Guinea'') was a portion of contemporary Ghana that was gradually colonized by the Dutch, beginning in 1612. The Dutch began trading in the area around 1598, joining the Portuguese which had a trading post there since the late 1400s. Willem Essuman Pietersen
Willem Essuman Pietersen (c. 1844 – 6 January 1914), also known as Willem Edmund Pietersen, was a Gold Coast merchant, politician, and educationist. He is also remembered as a goldsmith and watch repairer. Pietersen was co-founder of Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast, Ghana. Biography Early years in Elmina Pietersen was born in Elmina to Essuman and Nana Ambaam. His paternal grandfather Nana Kobina Gwira had introduced the salt industry to Elmina. He was educated at the Dutch government school of Elmina, and was employed as a clerk for the Dutch governor of Elmina on 30 April 1864. He was however fired on 24 November of the same year because of unsuitability. Pietersen then became a trader and a personal clerk to Mr. Stoové, before establishing himself as a goldsmith and watchmaker. Henry Van Hien
Henry van Hien (1857 or 1858 – 4 July 1928) was a Gold Coast merchant, politician, and nationalist leader. Biography Early life and business career Van Hien was born in Elmina to Carel Hendrik David van Hien (1833–1864), a government official and Acting Governor of the Dutch Gold Coast, and Elizabeth Essuman (ca. 1839–1930), sister of Willem Essuman Pietersen. He was educated at the Cape Coast Government School and, according to family tradition, went to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom for further education (this was not uncommon for the Euro-African elite in Cape Coast and Elmina). When he returned to the Gold Coast in 1878, he began working as an agent for F. & A. Swanzy at Shama, and later for Alexander Miller Bros. at Accra and Winneba.
