The Cardinal Stakes is a flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old horses. It is run at Chelmsford City over a distance of 1 mile. The race was run for the first time in 2019 as the last of seven races in the European Road to the Kentucky Derby series, through which horses earn points and the chance to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Cardinal Stakes (USA)
The Cardinal Stakes is a Grade III American thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares three-years-old and older over a distance of one and one eighth miles on the turf held annually in November at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The event offers a purse of $100,000. History The event was named after the official state bird of Kentucky, the Northern cardinal. The event was inaugurated on 23 November 1974, as the Kentucky Cardinal Stakes as a miles dirt race for three year olds and was won by veterinarian Albert F. Polk Jr's Cut the Talk, who was trained by Ohio native James E. (Jim) Morgan and ridden by Darrell Brown in a time of 1:45. The event was run for three year olds only one more time in 1975. In the 1976 the conditions of the event were changed to fillies and mares that were three years old or older at a distance of seven furlongs as the Kentucky Cardinal Handicap. 2020 Road To The Kentucky Derby
The 2020 Road to the Kentucky Derby was a series of races through which horses qualified for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, which was held on September 5 (rescheduled from the traditional first Saturday in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, coronavirus pandemic). The field for the Derby is limited to 20 horses, with up to four 'also eligibles' in case of a late withdrawal from the field. There are three separate paths for horses to take to qualify for the Derby: the main Road consisting of races in North America (plus one in Dubai), the Japan Road consisting of four races in Japan, and the European Road with seven European races in England, Ireland and France. The top four finishers in the specified races receive points, with higher points awarded in the major prep races. Earnings in non-restricted stakes races act as a tie breaker. Thady Gosden (born April 1995) is a British racehorse trainer He has trained over 300 winners worldwide, including winners of the Oaks, the British Champions Fillies' and Mares' Stakes, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Dubai Sheema Classic and the Prix Jacques Le Marois. Early career He was educated at Bristol University, where he studied History of Art, but said he always intended to become a trainer.
