Caracara (genus)
''Caracara'' is a genus in the family Falconidae and the subfamily Polyborinae. It contains one extant species, the crested caracara; and one extinct species, the Guadalupe caracara. The South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society has voted to again merge the two, retaining ''C. plancus'' as crested caracara. The taxonomists of the International Ornithologists' Union have also merged them. Appearance The crested caracara is distinguished by its long legs and medium size. The birds can reach a length of from head to tail. There are usually four points of identification of the caracara: strikingly white markings on the neck, the tip of both wings, and the tail. Along with their medium length, the caracara also has a wingspan of . When flying, the caracara is often noted to have a pattern on their underside that looks like a cross. Caracara (subfamily)
Caracaras are birds of prey in the family Falconidae. They are traditionally placed in subfamily Polyborinae with the forest falcons, but are sometimes considered to constitute their own subfamily, Caracarinae, or classified as members of the true falcon subfamily, Falconinae. Caracaras are principally birds of South and Central America, just reaching the southern United States. Unlike the ''Falco'' falcons in the same family, the birds in the five relevant genera are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are comparatively slow and are often scavengers (a notable exception being the red-throated caracara). Species Distribution The caracaras are found throughout much of the Americas. The range of the crested caracara extends as far north as the states of Arizona, Texas, and Florida in the United States. The Cara cara navel orange, or red-fleshed navel orange, is an early-to-midseason navel orange believed to have developed as a spontaneous bud mutation on a Washington navel orange tree. A botanical sport discovered at the Hacienda Caracara in Valencia, Venezuela in 1976, the cara cara appears to be of such uncertain parentage as to occasionally warrant the distinction of a ''mutation'', with only the tree on which it was found—the Washington navel—being an accepted progenitor. Cara caras did not enter the U.S consumer produce market until the late 1980s and were carried only by specialty markets for many years thereafter. Characteristics This medium-sized navel is seedless, sweet and low in acid, and characterized by little to no pith and easy, clean separation from the rind. ''Caracara'' (AMc-40), an placed in service by the U.S. Navy for use during World War II. The vessel was named after the caracara, a large South American bird of prey. Construction ''Caracara'' was laid down on 26 December 1940 and launched on 23 August 1941 by the Bristol Yacht Building Co., South Bristol, Maine. Service ''Caracara'' was delivered to the Navy at the Boston Navy Yard on 3 December 1941 and placed in service on 30 December 1941.
