Carbon Mineral Challenge
The Carbon Mineral Challenge is a citizen science project dedicated to accelerating the discovery of carbon-bearing minerals. The program launched in 2015 December with sponsorship from the Deep Carbon Observatory. The project ended in 2019 September, with 31 new carbon-bearing minerals found from 27 locations. Background Mineralogist Robert Hazen and his colleagues pioneered the concept of mineral evolution to explain how life and geology have intertwined throughout Earth's multi-billion year past. As part of that research, the group developed a model that combines the locations and distributions of known minerals to predict the number of unknown carbon minerals on Earth. The method is similar to statistical methods used in biology. Hazen and his group predicted that 145 carbon minerals remain undiscovered on Earth. Tinnunculite
Tinnunculite is a naturally-occurring form of dihydrate of uric acid. It should not be confused with a proposed mineral species with the identical name 'Tinnunculite', that forms when droppings from a European kestrel react with the burning dumps of coal mines and quarries. The name tinnunculite is derived from the kestrel's binomial name, "''Falco tinnunculus''", which is itself derived from the Latin word ''tinnunculus'', meaning "kestrel", from ''tinnulus'', meaning "shrill". Tinnunculite is a naturally occurring form of the same type of origin. The mineral is a dihydrate of uricite to which it is visually very similar. Tinnunculite is chemically similar to other organic minerals: guanine, uricite; also acetamide, kladnoite. Ewingite
Ewingite is a mineral discovered by Jakub Plášil of the Institute of Physics at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the Plavno mine, Czech Republic. Travis Olds of the University of Notre Dame and colleagues described ewingite, which is the most structurally complex known mineral on Earth. Ewingite is named in honor of Rodney C. Ewing, Professor of Geological Sciences at Stanford University, USA. The mineral is rare, due to its very narrow pH and compositional range required for formation, which are only known to occur in the Plavno mine. Ewingite forms through uranium oxidation occurring in the humid environment of the mine. The mineral is chemically similar to rabbittite, swartzite, and albrechtschraufite. Edscottite
Edscottite is an iron carbide mineral, with the formula Fe5C2. It was previously known to occur during iron smelting, but in 2019 was identified as occurring in nature, but not naturally occurring on earth, when it was discovered in a meteorite. Braunerite
Braunerite is a hydrous uranyl carbonate mineral discovered by Jakub Plášil of the Institute of Physics at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and colleagues in the Svornost mine in the Jáchymov ore district, Western Bohemia, Czech Republic. Braunerite crystals are yellow and have a glassy luster. The mineral is chemically similar to línekite.
