The Guntakal–Vasco da Gama section, or Mormugao Railway (formerly known as West of India Portuguese Railway), is a railway line connecting the town of Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh and Vasco da Gama in Goa, India. South Western Railway Zone
The South Western Railway (SWR) is one of the 19 railway zones in India, headquartered at Hubballi in Karnataka State. SWR was created from carving out the routes from Southern Railways, South Central Railways and Central Railways in 2003. History The South Western Railway zone came into existence on 1 April 2003 by bifurcating Mysuru and Bengaluru divisions from Southern Railway along with Hubballi division from South Central Railway. It is headquartered at Hubballi and comprises three divisions namely Hubballi, Mysuru, and Bengaluru. The fourth division at Kalaburagi was slated to be the fourth division which was supposed to be carved out from Hubli, Secunderabad, Guntakal and Solapur divisions. South Goa District
South Goa district is one of two districts that comprises the state of Goa, India, within the region known as the Konkan. Braganza Ghats
Braganza Ghats are a stretch of hill section at the Karnataka – Goa border. This 26 km ghat section rail road connects coastal Goa to the hinterlands of Karnataka and other parts. It has three stations en route in the ghats – Caranzol, Doodhsagar and Sonaulim. Location The Braganza Ghat section is located on the Karnataka-Goa border in the Western Ghats. It starts from Castle rock in Karnataka and ends up at Kulem in Goa. Prior to the Konkan Railways this was the only way one could have reached Goa via rail. Stations The 26 km section of ghats starts at Castle Rock in Karnataka and ends at Kulem in Goa and has 3 stations en route - Caranzol, Doodhsagar and Sonalium. Both the uphill as well as the downhill trains have commercial halts at Castle Rock and Kulem which also serve as the stations for attachment and detachment of brakes.
