Car 553 is a private railroad car, privately owned passenger car (rail), railroad passenger car. It operated exclusively on Metra's Union Pacific North Line in Northeastern Illinois, and was the last privately-owned membership-based commuter rail car operating in the United States. History Private commuter car service originally began on the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1929 to serve wealthy commuters in the affluent North Shore (Chicago), North Shore suburbs of Chicago. The first private car was C&NW 6700 and was named "The Deerpath". Car 553 was originally built for the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1949 by the American Car and Foundry Company as car 7901. It was originally used as a lounge and barbershop car on ''City of Los Angeles (train), City of Los Angeles'', a long distance train service between Chicago and Los Angeles. Ravinia is a station on Metra's Union Pacific North Line. The station is located at 510 Roger Williams Avenue in Highland Park, Illinois. In Metra's zone-based fare structure, Ravinia is located in zone E. As of 2018, Ravinia is the 139th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 326 weekday boardings. Ravinia is away from Ogilvie Transportation Center in downtown Chicago, the inbound terminus of the line. Trains continue as far north as Kenosha, Wisconsin. As of April 25, 2022, Ravinia is served by 44 trains (23 inbound, 21 outbound) on weekdays, by all 26 trains (13 in each direction) on Saturdays, and by all 18 trains (nine in each direction) on Sundays and holidays. The Richard B. Ogilvie Transportation Center (; formerly Chicago and North Western Terminal) is a commuter rail terminal in downtown Chicago, Illinois. It is the terminus for the three commuter rail lines of Metra's Union Pacific District to Chicago's northern and western suburbs, which approach the terminal elevated above street level. It occupies the lower floors of the 500 West Madison Street building. The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is the financial and oversight body for the three transit agencies in northeastern Illinois; the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace, which are called Service Boards in the RTA Act. The ''City of Los Angeles'' was a streamlined passenger train between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California via Omaha, Nebraska, and Ogden, Utah. Between Omaha and Los Angeles it ran on the Union Pacific Railroad; east of Omaha it ran on the Chicago and North Western Railway until October 1955 and on the Milwaukee Road thereafter. Highland Park is a suburban city located in the southeastern part of Lake County, Illinois, United States, about north of downtown Chicago. Per the 2020 census, the population was 30,176.
