''Captain Newman, M.D.'' is a 1963 American comedy drama film directed by David Miller and starring Gregory Peck, Tony Curtis, Angie Dickinson, Robert Duvall, Eddie Albert and Bobby Darin. Peck's Brentwood Production also co-produced the film. The film is based on the 1961 novel by Leo Rosten. It was loosely based on the World War II experiences of Rosten's close friend Ralph Greenson, M.D., while Greenson was a captain in the Army Medical Corps supporting the U.S. Army Air Forces and stationed at Yuma Army Airfield in Yuma, Arizona. Greenson is well known for his work on "empathy" and was one of the first in his field to seriously associate posttraumatic stress disorder (years before that terminology was developed) with wartime experiences. David Miller (November 28, 1909 – April 14, 1992) was an American film director who directed varied films such as ''Billy the Kid (1941 film), Billy the Kid'' (1941) with Robert Taylor (American actor), Robert Taylor and Brian Donlevy, ''Flying Tigers (film), Flying Tigers'' (1943) with John Wayne, and ''Love Happy'' (1949) with the Marx Brothers. Alma Ruth Macrorie (December 7, 1904 – June 28, 1970) was an American film editor and occasional actress. In 1956, she received an Academy Award nomination for editing the film ''The Bridges at Toko-Ri''. Early years Alma was born in Davenport, Iowa, to Rutherford Macrorie and Catherine McKinney; she was their only child together. Macrorie attended Davenport High School and was active in declamation competition there. Career One of Macrorie's early film editing assignments was ''Road to Zanzibar'' (1941). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental and behavioral disorder that can develop because of exposure to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, child abuse, domestic violence, or other threats on a person's life. Ralph R. Greenson (born Romeo Samuel Greenschpoon, September 20, 1911 – November 24, 1979) was a prominent American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Leo Calvin Rosten (Yiddish: ; April 11, 1908 – February 19, 1997) was an American humorist in the fields of scriptwriting, storywriting, journalism, and Yiddish lexicography. Early life Rosten was born into a Yiddish-speaking family in Łódź, Russian Empire (now in Poland), but immigrated to the United States with his family in 1911 when he was three. His parents were Samuel Rosten and Ida Freundlich Rosten, both trade unionists. They opened a knitting shop in the Greater Lawndale area of Chicago, where Rosten and his younger sister grew up among other working-class Jewish families.
