The Capricorn Way is an Australian road route from Rockhampton to Barcaldine in Queensland. Using the Capricorn Way, it is from Rockhampton to Barcaldine. The recommended journey time, allowing for some sightseeing, food and rest (including an overnight stop) is 30 hours. Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. State Strategic Touring Route
State Strategic Touring Routes (SSTR) are road routes in Queensland, Australia, which have been identified as significant to motoring tourists. These are the primary routes used by tourists as they provide the connections between popular tourist locations, and consequently have high volumes of tourist traffic. Standardised road signage is used to identify the route itself, with "Welcome to" signage at towns and districts of interest to tourists, as well as "turn off" signage to natural attractions. Licensed as CC BY 3.0 AU. SSTRs must meet criteria as to road quality and safety to be included. Roads used in SSTRs may be closed in some seasons, provided this information is made available to SSTRs users. Capricorn Highway
The Capricorn Highway is located in Central Queensland, Australia, and links the city of Rockhampton with western Queensland. The highway is long, and joins the Landsborough Highway at Barcaldine. Formerly National Route 66, Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system much of Australia had adopted in the early-2000s and is now designated as A4. The highway runs parallel with the Tropic of Capricorn, hence its name. Other towns situated along the highway include (from east to west): Gracemere, Kabra, Stanwell, Westwood, Gogango, Duaringa, Dingo, Bluff, Blackwater, Comet, Emerald, Bogantungan, Alpha and Jericho. Duaringa
Duaringa is a town in the Central Highlands Region and a locality split between the Central Highlands Region and the Aboriginal Shire of Woorabinda in Central Queensland, Australia. In the , Duaringa had a population of 262 people. Geography Duaringa is on the Capricorn Highway, west of Rockhampton. The Dawson River forms the eastern boundary of the locality, while the Mackenzie River forms the northern boundary. The Mackenzie River crossing on Apis Creek Road is approximately 20 kilometres north of the Duaringa township. Motorists are able to use the gravel road to travel through to Marlborough, Queensland but the low level crossing at the Mackenzie River can quickly succumb to river rises during wet weather and heavy rain upstream, closing the road. Blackwater is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Blackwater had a population of 4,702 people. It is a town in a significant coal mining area in Central Queensland. The name of the township was inspired by the dark colour of local waterholes. Geography Six major open cut coal mines and one underground dot the landscape surrounding the town and provide its main employment opportunities. Emerald is a rural town and locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Emerald had a population of 14,906 people. The town is the headquarters for the Central Highlands Regional Council. Geography Emerald lies on the Nogoa River, a tributary of the Fitzroy River. The Gemfields is a former locality in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , The Gemfields had a population of 1,449 people. On 17 April 2020, the Queensland Government re-drew the boundaries of localities within the Central Highlands Region by removing the locality of The Gemfields in order to create three new localities of Rubyvale, Sapphire Central and Anakie Siding (around the towns of Rubyvale, Sapphire, and Anakie respectively).
