Capps Corner, Texas
Capps Corner is an unincorporated community in Montague County, Texas, United States. The town is at the intersection of Farm to Market Road 1956, or "Hoosier Highway", and Farm to Market Road 677, 13 miles east of Nocona, eight miles north of Saint Jo, and six miles south of Illinois Bend in far northeastern Montague County. The settlement was established ''circa'' 1925 and named for E. G. (Cap) Adams. It was still listed as a community in 1990. Central to this small village was a "filling station" at the corner of the two farm roads, with "Capps Corner" written above the old-fashioned pumps. The store remained in business well into the 1980s; though it has since closed, it can still be seen there. Montague County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas, established in 1857. As of the 2020 census, its population was 19,965. The county seat is Montague. The county was created in 1857 and organized the next year. It is named for Daniel Montague, a surveyor and soldier in the Mexican–American War. Nocona, Texas
Nocona is a city along U.S. Highway 82 and State Highway 175 in Montague County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,033 at the 2010 census. The city, its lake, and its resurgence as a regional travel destination were featured in thJune 2012 editionof ''Texas Highways'' magazine. History The city is named for Peta Nocona, the Comanche chief. The area was first known to white settlers as the last stop in Texas before crossing the Red River on the Chisolm Trail. It was founded in 1887 along a particular bend in the Gainesville, Henrietta and Western Railway line, which soon became part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, connecting Gainesville and Henrietta, and later Wichita Falls. Saint Jo, Texas
Saint Jo is a city in Montague County, Texas, United States, along the northern border of the state. The population was 1,043 at the 2010 census. History Established by primarily European Americans in 1856, the city was originally known as Head of Elm, named for its location at the headwaters of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, one of the four distinct headwaters. Numerous settlers came to this area from the Upper South of Tennessee and Kentucky, attracted to new opportunities in Texas. Joe Howell was a surveyor who originally laid out the town and is credited as founder. According to one account, Irby Holt Boggess from Tennessee gave leadership in partnership with Howell in or around 1872. This account was displayed in 1986 in the Stonewall Saloon Museum on the town square of Saint Jo. It is incorporated in a story about Boggess. Illinois Bend, Texas
Illinois Bend is an unincorporated community in Montague County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000. History The community was founded in 1862 by a small group of people who relocated to Texas from Illinois. It was formerly known as Wardville after the local landowner C. M. Ward. When a post office was established there in 1877, the name was changed to Illinois Bend. The community had 300 residents, two gristmills, numerous cotton gins, and several churches in 1885. Due to rail lines avoiding the village, its population had decreased to 112 by 1910. In the late 1940s, when one business was there, there were 68 residents. Sometime around 1930, the community's post office was shut down. There were just 51 people living in Illinois Bend by the late 1960s. The population had decreased to thirty by 2000.
