Capitol Square (skyscraper)
Capitol Square is a skyscraper on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was completed in 1984, has 26 floors, and of floor space. The building was designed by the architectural firm Abramovitz, Harris & Kingsland and it follows the international and modern architectural styles. Capitol Square is the 13th tallest building in Columbus. The 20-floor Sheraton Columbus Hotel at Capitol Square is part of the same complex, and is constructed on the former site of the Hartman Building. The statue ''Naiads'' is situated in a courtyard between Capitol Square and the Sheraton hotel. West of Capitol Square is a courtyard created in 1984 between the building and the Ohio Theatre, including the Galbreath Pavilion. A skyscraper is a tall continuously habitable building having multiple floors. Capitol Square
Capitol Square is a public square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The square includes the Ohio Statehouse, its Capitol Grounds, as well as the buildings and features surrounding the square. The Capitol Grounds are surrounded on the north and west by Broad and High Streets, the main thoroughfares of the city since its founding, forming the city's 100 percent corner. Downtown Columbus is the central business district of Columbus, Ohio. Downtown is centered on the intersection of Broad and High Streets, and encompasses all of the area inside the Inner Belt. Abramovitz, Harris & Kingsland
Max Abramovitz (May 23, 1908 – September 12, 2004) was an American architect. He was best known for his work with the New York City firm Harrison & Abramovitz. Life Abramovitz was the son of Romanian Jewish immigrant parents. He graduated in 1929 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Architecture. While at Illinois, Abramovitz was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. He later received an M.S. from Columbia University's architecture school in 1931. He also was the recipient of a two-year fellowship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to the US and becoming partners with Wallace Harrison from 1941 to 1976. In 1961, he was an invited resident (RAAR) of the American Academy in Rome. Abramovitz died in September 2004 in Pound Ridge, New York, at the age of 96. Sheraton Columbus Hotel At Capitol Square
The Sheraton Columbus Hotel at Capitol Square is a highrise hotel on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The building, constructed along with the Capitol Square skyscraper in the 1980s, houses a Sheraton hotel and Starbucks coffee shop. The site was formerly home to the Hartman Building and Hartman Theatre. History The hotel opened on January 16, 1984 as the Hyatt on Capitol Square. It was constructed along with the Capitol Square skyscraper on the site of the Hartman Building and Hartman Theatre, as part of the Capitol South redevelopment. The Hyatt was purchased out of receivership on July 7, 2011 by Driftwood Hospitality Management for $19.5 million. They converted the property to a Sheraton and undertook a year-long $9.5 million renovation, completed in January 2013. Naiads (Greaves)
''Naiads'' is a 1984 fountain and sculpture by Jack Greaves, installed by the Capitol Square skyscraper in Columbus, Ohio. Description and history The bronze sculpture depicts two nude women with nine birds flying above. They rest on a base depicting swimming salmon and sunfish. The Ohio Theatre is a performing arts center and former movie palace on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. Known as the "Official Theatre of the State of Ohio", the 1928 building was saved from demolition in 1969 and was later completely restored. The Hartman Building and Theater was a pair of historic buildings on Capitol Square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The structures were commissioned by Samuel B. Hartman, designed by Richards, McCarty and Bulford in the Renaissance Revival style. The theater was demolished in 1971, followed by the office building in 1981. Description The site, on the southwest corner of State and Third Streets, is now occupied by the Capitol Square (skyscraper), Capitol Square skyscraper and the Sheraton Columbus Hotel at Capitol Square.
