Capital District (VHSL)
The Capital District consist of public schools located East and Northeast of the James River in the Greater Richmond Region. Capital District schools compete in the 6A, 5A, 4A, and 3A divisions. Facts about the District The district contained seven schools until 2003, when new Hanover High School opened. The district went back to seven schools the next year when John F. Kennedy High School merged with Armstrong High School. In 2010, the district expanded back to eight schools when newly constructeGlen Allen High Schoolwas opened. In 2015 Glen Allen High School was moved to the Colonial District for proximity reasons. Patrick Henry High School was pulled from the colonial district and placed in the capital district allowing all Hanover County Schools to compete against each other annually. Hanover High School is a high school located in the Mechanicsville census-designated place (CDP) of unincorporated Hanover County, Virginia, United States. The school opened during the 2003–04 academic year with Carol Cash as principal. The second principal of the school was George Sadler, who took on the role when Cash retired in 2007. Sadler retired from the role at the end of the 2011–2012 school year. Dana Gresham joined the school as principal in July 2012 after serving as a principal at Rural Point Elementary School. Kristina Reece became principal in the 2015–2016 school year. It is an International Baccalaureate sponsored school. Armstrong High School (Richmond, Virginia)
Armstrong High School, part of the Richmond Public Schools, is a high school located in Richmond, Virginia, United States, with grades 9–12. The school was founded in 1867 as the Richmond Normal and High School by the Freedmen's Bureau and was eventually incorporated into the Richmond school system in 1876. The school's namesake is former Union General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, a white commander of a U.S. Colored Troops (USCT) regiment during the American Civil War. General Armstrong later founded Hampton Institute, a historically black college now known as Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Armstrong's was a mentor of Booker T. Washington. Henrico High School is a public high school located in Henrico County, Virginia and operated by the Henrico County Public Schools. Highland Springs High School
Highland Springs High School is a public high school located in the East End of Henrico County, Virginia. It was one of the first high schools established in the Greater Richmond Region. Replacement school After 70 years in its Oak Avenue facility, a new Highland Springs High School building opened for the 2021-22 school year. The new building replaced the original high school building with one built nearby. The project was part of a two-school replacement initiative by Henrico County Public Schools, which also opened a new J.R. Tucker High School for 2021-22. Mechanicsville High School
Mechanicsville High School (formerly Lee-Davis High School) is a public high school located in Mechanicsville, Virginia, United States. It serves students in grades 9 through 12 and is part of Hanover County Public Schools. History Mechanicsville High School opened in 1959 under the name Lee-Davis High School and received students from the consolidation of Battlefield Park and Washington-Henry High Schools. After the new high school opened, both Battlefield Park and Washington-Henry became elementary schools. Lee-Davis opened in the midst of Massive Resistance, as the State of Virginia opposed desegregation of its public schools, despite the 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. Varina High School
Varina High School is located in eastern Henrico County, Virginia. It is one of nine high schools in Henrico County Public Schools and was founded in 1909, with the current campus opening in 1963.
