Capistrello Massacre
The Capistrello massacre ( it, eccidio di Capistrello) was a mass killing carried out in Capistrello, a small town in Abruzzo, Italy, on 4 June 1944 by Nazi and Fascist occupation troops during World War II. A first tragical episode occurred a few months earlier on 20 March, when a local youth was barbarically tortured and then shot. The following roundup made by Nazists and Fascists on the slopes of Mount Salviano led to the capture and torture of 33 shepherds and breeders. The shooting occurred near Capistrello railway station. Historical background The massacre occurred during World War II on 4 June 1944, a few days after the breakthrough of the Gustav Line by the Allied forces which obliged Germans to retreat about further north on that Hitler Line which proved to be vulnerable and was subsequently named Senger Line. Roccaraso is a town and ''comune'' in central Italy, in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region. History Founding The town of Roccaraso dates back to around 975 AD, and is located near the Rasinus stream, from which some believe it took its original name, Rocca Rasini. It developed as a farming village, inhabited by herdsmen and craftsmen, which guaranteed its people a peaceful and prosperous life. Onna (L'Aquila)
Onna is a ''frazione'' of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo, region of central Italy. It is situated in the Apennine Mountain Range, above sea level. The population is about 300 people. Early history The area has been inhabited for approximately 1,000 years. It is probable that initially it did not have a defined city structure. During the Roman conquest, the fertility of the area guaranteed food production for Rome. The earliest record of Onna is in 1178 during the time of Pope Clement III, in Villa Unda. Onna is mentioned again by Pope Innocent III in 1204. Aside from these two records, the early history of the area is a mystery. There existed a "grancia" (a type of agricultural company detached from the convent) run by the Cistercian monks. Modern history A girl was killed by the German occupation forces on 2 June 1944. Carsoli (Marsicano: ') is a town and ''comune'' in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo (central Italy). The ancient Roman city lies southwest of the modern town. History The ancient city, known as ''Carsioli'' (or ''Carseoli''), was founded in the country of the Aequi between 302 and 298 BC, just after the establishment of Alba Fucens, no doubt as a stronghold to guard the road to the latter. It is mentioned in 211 BC as one of the 12 of 30 Latin colonies that protested their inability to furnish more men or money for the war against Hannibal. It is known that, in 168 BC, it was used as a place of confinement for political prisoners. It was sacked in the Social War, but probably became a ''municipium'' after it. The 1st century agricultural writer Columella possessed estates there.
