Cape Liptrap
Cape Liptrap is located in south Gippsland, Victoria and is a peninsula that is the extension of the Hoddle Range that runs out to sea in a southwesterly direction. With a latitude of 38° 53' 60" S it the second most southerly point on the Australian mainland, just south of Cape Otway which lies to the west. Wilsons Promontory which is the most southerly point sits to the southeast separated from Cape Liptrap by Waratah Bay. It was sighted by Lieutenant James Grant on 9 December 1800 from the survey brig HMS Lady Nelson and named after John Liptrap. Cape Liptrap sits high above the Bass Strait with steep slopes and cliffs of folded marine sediments flanked by rock pinnacles and wave cut platforms. At the end of the peninsula is Cape Liptrap Lighthouse that was built in 1951 in cast concrete, and is octagonal in shape. Wonthaggi is a seaside town located south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Inverloch is a seaside town located in Victoria, Australia and the most populous city of the Bass Coast Shire. Tarwin Lower is a small town located south-east of Melbourne, Australia. It rests on the south bank of the Tarwin River and at the , had a population of 115. History The original settlement is believed to have started at an area called Tarwin Meadows. The area south of Tarwin Lower is still called by this name. Tarwin Lower is on the banks of the Tarwin River. The first major land-holder in the area was George Black. Black leased land from the Bass River through to Cape Liptrap. Sandy Point is a township in south Gippsland, Victoria near Wilsons Promontory. At the , Sandy Point had a population of 270, growing to several thousand during the holiday period. It is surrounded by areas of significant natural heritage. Sandy Point is one of the few coastal towns in the region to remain relatively unaffected by the housing boom along the coast. Cape Liptrap Lighthouse
Cape Liptrap Lighthouse stands upon the rocky cliff top of Cape Liptrap peninsula, on a solitary part of the South Gippsland coastline. The lighthouse warns ships of the rocks in treacherous Bass Strait. History The first Cape Liptrap lighthouse was established in 1913. It was a 2.1 metre steel tower with an acetylene light. As a lighthouse keeper was never stationed at Cape Liptrap, it is really the first automatic Commonwealth funded light to be put into service. The current lighthouse was built in 1951 in cast concrete and is devised in a square shape with flattened edges. The light characteristic is one flash every 12 seconds, emitted from a height of 93.6 m above sea level. The lighthouse was converted to electrical power in 1970. His Majestys Armed Survey Vessel ''Lady Nelson'' was commissioned in 1799 to survey the coast of Australia. At the time large parts of the Australian coast were unmapped and Britain had claimed only part of the continent. The British Government were concerned that, in the event of settlers of another European power becoming established in Australia, any future conflict in Europe would lead to a widening of the conflict into the southern hemisphere to the detriment of the trade that Britain sought to develop. It was against this background that ''Lady Nelson'' was chosen to survey and establish sovereignty over strategic parts of the continent.
