Cape Constance () is a cape that marks the northern tip of the peninsula between Antarctic Bay and Possession Bay on the north coast of South Georgia. In geography, a cape is a headland or a promontory of large size extending into a body of water, usually the sea.Whittow, John (1984). ''Dictionary of Physical Geography''. London: Penguin, 1984, p. 80. . A cape usually represents a marked change in trend of the Coast, coastline, often making them important landmarks in sea navigation. This also makes them prone to natural forms of erosion, mainly tidal actions, which results in them having a relatively short geological lifespan. Capes can be formed by glaciers, volcanoes, and changes in sea level. Erosion plays a large role in each of these methods of formation. Antarctic Bay
Antarctic Bay is a bay wide which recedes southwest , entered between Antarctic Point and Morse Point on the north coast of South Georgia. It was probably first sighted by a British expedition under James Cook in 1775, and was explored in 1902 by members of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, under Otto Nordenskiöld, who named it for their ship, the ''Antarctic''. An alternative (defunct) name for it was Woodward Harbour (Mount Woodward is nearby). Possession Bay
Possession Bay is a bay wide on the north coast of South Georgia, an island in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It recedes southwest for , and is separated from Cook Bay to the north by Black Head promontory. It is connected to King Haakon Bay by Shackleton Gap, a mountain pass. Geography Several features in and around Possession Bay have been charted by various Antarctic expeditions. Black Head is a dark, rugged promontory, high, which separates Possession Bay from Cook Bay, to the north. At the head of the bay, Inner Reef extends from the headland Adventure Point on the west side of the bay to Brown Point on the east side. Just south of Adventure Point is Brighton Beach, which extends to Zero Point. Zero Point sits at the north side of Assistance Bay, a small bay within the larger Possession Bay. South Georgia Island
South Georgia ( es, Isla San Pedro) is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean that is part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It lies around east of the Falkland Islands. Stretching in the east–west direction, South Georgia is around long and has a maximum width of . The terrain is mountainous, with the central ridge rising to at Mount Paget. The northern coast is indented with numerous bays and fjords, serving as good harbours. Discovered by Europeans in 1675, South Georgia had no indigenous population due to its harsh climate and remoteness. Captain James Cook in made the first landing, survey and mapping of the island, and on 17 January 1775 he claimed it a British possession, naming it "Isle of Georgia" after King George III.
