__NOTOC__ Cape Borda is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on Kangaroo Island about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide. Its boundaries were created in 2002 in respect to “the long established name” which is reported to be derived from the navigation aid within its boundaries - the Cape Borda Lightstation. The major land uses within the locality includes conservation and primary production with the former land use including the following protected areas - the Flinders Chase National Park, the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area and the Cape Torrens Wilderness Protection Area. Part of the southern boundary of Cape Borda is formed by the Playford Highway. Cape Borda Lightstation
Cape Borda Lighthouse (formerly known as the Flinders Light) is a lighthouse in the Australian state of South Australia located at Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island. History It was built in 1858 and is the third oldest remaining and only square stone lighthouse in South Australia. The lighthouse was built to guide ships travelling along the Roaring Forties trade route heading into the Investigator Strait towards Port Adelaide. Originally there was no road linking Cape Borda to the rest of Kangaroo Island and all supplies had to be hauled up from ships via a steep steel railway at a nearby cove known as Harvey's Return then taken to the lighthouse every three months. The Division of Mayo is an Australian electoral division located to the east and south of Adelaide, South Australia. Created in the state redistribution of 3 September 1984, the division is named after Helen Mayo, a social activist and the first woman elected to an Australian University Council. Cape Torrens Wilderness Protection Area, formerly the Cape Torrens Conservation Park and the Cape Torrens National Park, is a protected area on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It was originally dedicated on 21 January 1971 to conserve remnant native vegetation with outstanding coastal and cliff scenery and proclaimed as a wilderness protection area on 15 October 1993. Description The wilderness protection area has an area of with of coastline including Cape Torrens. It lies towards the western end of the island's north coast. It is characterised by a coastal ridge and the scenic cliffs typical of the north coast, declining in altitude further inland.
