Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. As of 2015, there were 2,054 cantons in France. Bourg-et-Comin
Bourg-et-Comin () is a commune in the department of Aisne in Hauts-de-France in northern France. History The area around Bourg et Comin has been occupied since Neolithic times with settlements along the River Aisne. The village grew as a fortified place on the road between Laon and Fismes . The Church of St. Martin is a Romanesque church of the 12th century. It has been listed as an historical monument since 1919 . The tower is protected by a 13th century two-sided gable roof. The whole of the surrounding area was part of a World War I battlefield and there are many military cemeteries in the area. The German army held the high ground to the north known as the Chemin des Dames and resisted two attacks by the French army to dislodge them in 1914 and 1917; and then used the high ground to launch a surprise offensive in 1918. Craonne
Craonne () is a commune in the Aisne department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. History It was the site of the Napoleonic Battle of Craonne in 1814. The former town was totally destroyed by artillery during the Nivelle Offensive in World War I, inspiring the song La Chanson de Craonne. It was an arboretum.
