The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). Neuville-de-Poitou
Neuville-de-Poitou () is a commune in the Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in western France. History Neuville was first named ''Nova Villa'' in 876, through a donation by a Frank by the name of Aldurus, at abbaye Saint-Hilaire de Poitiers. During the hundred years war, Neuville suffered because of its precarious position between the two kingdoms. Like most of Poitou, it became subject to English control in 1360. In 1410 the parish reorganized itself and took the name of Notre-Dame de Neuville. Commerce and crafts developed, and soon the population was doing well. (wine, wheat, wool, cattle and mules) The war of religion divided the country. Plague hit the region between 1628 and 1632. In 1750, Neuville only had 403 people, whereas her rival, Vendeuvre had 613. During the French Revolution, conscription provoked many incidents, and the castle of the area, ''le château de Bellefois'' was destroyed. Mirebeau
Mirebeau (; Poitevin: ''Mirebea'') is a commune in the Vienne department, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, western France. History Fulk Nerra (970-1040), Count of Anjou conquered Mirebeau and built a castle there. His son, Geoffrey of Anjou, defeated William VI, Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou at the battle of Moncontour on September 20, 1033, and from that date Mirebeau belonged to the county of Anjou until 1790, and the replacement of the old provinces by departements during the French revolution. In mid-July 1202, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine was blocked there by the army of the King of France commanded by Arthur, Duke of Brittany, a grandson of Eleanor's. The latter took the city, and was about to storm the castle when Eleanor managed to flee, rescued by the arrival of her son John, King of England on August 1.
