The Cantons of France, canton of La Région Limouxine (before 2015: ''canton of Limoux'') is an administrative division of the Aude departments of France, department, southern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Limoux. Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. Saint-Hilaire, Aude
Saint-Hilaire (; oc, Sant Ilari) is a commune in the Aude department in the Occitanie region in southern France. Geography The commune of Saint-Hilaire is situated in the Aude department, midway between Limoux and Carcassonne in the region of the Carcassès. It is mostly covered by the forest of Crausse-Rabassié. The river Lauquet borders it to the north. It is crossed by the Meridian of Paris, otherwise known as the Green Meridian. History The history of Saint-Hilaire is closely linked with that of the abbey. It begins in the Roman era but the most important remains date from the Middle Ages. In the eighth century, the abbey was built under the name of Saint Saturnin and then Saint Hilaire, Bishop of Carcassonne in the sixth century. Over the course of centuries, the village grew to surround the abbey. The abbots built fortifications around the village to protect it from the troubles of the Hundred Years War. Pomas
Pomas is a commune in the Aude department in Occitanie southern France. It is located 4 km northwest of Saint-Hilaire, 15 km south of Carcassonne, 100 km southeast of Toulouse. History Pomas dates back to the 9th century when it was known as Pomaris. In 1212, the local lord, Bernard de Pomars, a Cathar, was denounced as a heretic; his lands were taken and given to Philippe Golhoin. In 1559, the Rabot family took over the lordship of Pomas. The lordship was sold off in 1719. Attractions The château de Pomas dates back to the 12th century and is notable for its square tower and cruciform archers' windows. Pomas has small, single track railway station, on the Carcassonne - Rivesaltes railway line, between Verzeille and Limoux. Its shops include a bakery, a specialist local wine shop, and a tobacconist.
