The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). Var (, ) is a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of Southeastern France. It takes its name from the river Var, which flowed along its eastern boundary, until the boundary was moved in 1860 and the department is no longer associated with the river. The Var department is bordered on the east by the department of Alpes-Maritimes, to the west by Bouches-du-Rhône, to the north of the river Verdon by the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea. La Garde, Var
La Garde (; Provençal Occitan: ''La Garda'') is a seaside commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. It is located in the Métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée, east of the city of Toulon. In 2019, it had a population of 25,505. History The name derives from the town's ancient origins, meaning "The Guard". It is mentioned in 1056, when its castle was a fief of the Bishops of Toulon; they kept it until the 13th century, when it was handed over to the Castellanes, then the lords of Glandevès and the Thomas. Today only a tower and the chapel remain of the castle. La Garde was repeatedly invaded during the French Wars of Religion. In 1707 it was sacked by Savoyard troops. Carqueiranne
Carqueiranne (, ; oc, Carcairana, italic=yes, , or , ) is a commune in the Var department, administrative region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (historically Provence), Southeastern France. It is known now as a tourist seaside resort with good windsurfing nearby, at Almanarre Beach. Population Saint Exupéry The town has a literary claim to fame as well. In early August 1944, an unidentifiable body wearing French military colours was found near here, which was long believed to be that of famous novelist Antoine de Saint Exupéry, author of The Little Prince. In 1998, a bracelet known to be his, with a fragment of cloth still attached, was found in the sea east of Riou Island (south of Marseille). In 2000, a crashed P-38 Lightning was found in the seabed off the coast of Marseille, near where the bracelet was found, and it was confirmed to be the one that St. Exupéry was flying.
