The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). Aveyron
Aveyron (; oc, Avairon; ) is a department in the region of Occitania, Southern France. It was named after the river Aveyron. Its inhabitants are known as ''Aveyronnais'' (masculine) or ''Aveyronnaises'' (feminine) in French. The inhabitants of Aveyron's prefecture, Rodez, are called ''Ruthénois'', based upon the first Celtic settlers in the area, the Ruteni. With an area of and a population of 279,595, Aveyron is a largely rural department with a population density of 32 per square kilometer (83/sq mi). Aubin, Aveyron
Aubin (; Languedocien: ''Aubinh'') is a commune in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie of southern France. The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Aubinois''. Geography Aubin is located some 20 km south-east of Figeac and immediately south of Decazeville. Access to the commune is by road D 5 from Viviez in the north-west which passes through the centre of the commune and the town and continues south to Montbazens. The D221 goes from the town north to Decazeville. The D 11 goes east from the town to Cransac. The minor D 513 road branches off the D 5 on the north-western border of the commune and goes east through the north of the commune to Firmi. The Capdenac-Gare to Rodez railway line passes through the commune and there is a station at the town: Aubin station. Anglars-Saint-Félix (Languedocien: ''Anglars de Rinhac'') is a commune in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie region of southern France. Geography Anglars-Saint-Félix is located some 20 km north-east of Villefranche-de-Rouergue and 30 km west by north-west of Rodez. It can be accessed by road D1 from Lanuéjouls to the village which then continues to the eastern border of the commune where it changes to the D994 and continues east to Rodez. There is also the D61 road from Prévinquières in the south to the village then continuing north to join the D994 west of Roussennac. The D156 also goes from the village to Privezac in the west. Auzits
Auzits (; oc, Ausits) is a commune in the Aveyron department in the Occitanie region of southern France. The inhabitants of the commune are known as ''Auzitois'' or ''Auzitoises''. Geography Auzits is located at the top of a hill with the church dominating the valley some 10 km south-east of Decazeville and 28 km north-west of Rodez. It is a large, green, and hilly commune ranging from the Plateau of Hymes to Ruhle le Haut with many vantage points especially from the highest point in the commune at Hautesserre where there is a 360 degree panorama. Belcastel, Aveyron
Belcastel (; oc, Bèlcastèl) is a commune in the Aveyron department in southern France. The village is medieval in character, with cobbled streets and lauze-roofed (stone tiled) houses. The bulk of the village and the castle ( Château de Belcastel) are situated on the steep north bank of the river Aveyron. Several buildings including the 15th-century church are on the south side of the river, with a similarly aged bridge (pictured) connecting the two. A ruined fort, Fort du Lourdou, can also be found about a kilometre west of the village on the south bank of the river at the Roc d'Anglars. It was nominated as one of the "most beautiful villages of France" (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France), and the local council regularly hosts watercolour competitions and art exhibitions during the summer. Cransac
Cransac () is a commune in the Aveyron department in southern France. Cransac station has rail connections to Brive-la-Gaillarde, Figeac and Rodez. The town was a coal-mining centre until the mine closed in 1962. Cransac has mineral springs, known in the middle ages. There are iron-mines in the neighbourhood. Hills to the north of the town contain disused coal-mines which have been on fire for centuries. About to the south is the fine Renaissance château of Bournazel, built for the most part by Jean de Buisson, baron of Bournazel, about 1545. The barony of Bournazel became a marquisate in 1624.
