The canton of Ambert is an administrative division of the Puy-de-Dôme department, central France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Ambert. Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. Saint-Just () is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in central France. 2020 shooting On 23 December 2020, three police officers were shot dead and a fourth injured in the commune after responding to a report of domestic violence. The gunman, a 48-year-old man already known to authorities for child custody issues, then set fire to his home and was later found dead in his vehicle. President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Jean Castex reacted to the incident. Non-terrorist gun attacks on French police officers are rare; the last such incident occurred in 2012, according to BBC News. Saint-Alyre-d'Arlanc
Saint-Alyre-d'Arlanc (, literally ''Saint-Alyre of Arlanc''; Auvergnat: ''Sent Alire d'Arlanc'') is a commune in the Puy-de-Dôme department in Auvergne in central France. Geography It is situated on the D999 road and almost midway between the cities of Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Étienne at the heart of the Parc naturel régional Livradois-Forez. The village is surrounded by pine forest with wild mushrooms to be found in the woods during autumn, rolling countryside and it is on the pilgrim trail. 9 km to the south is the mediaeval abbey town of La Chaise-Dieu. Population The village has a population of 50 permanent year round residents, which swells to 3-400 during the summer months. The mayor, elected in 2020, is Olivier Bourron. The annual ''Fête Patronale'' is held over the weekend of the third Sunday in July.
