Its seat is in Abbeville. The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the France, French Republic's Departments of France, departments and Arrondissements of France, arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as Constituency, constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments (Departmental council (France), departmental councils, formerly general councils). Grand-Laviers (; pcd, Grand-Lavier) is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography The commune is situated on the D40 road, some northwest of Abbeville, by the banks of the canalised river Somme. The ancient forests of Abbeville remain as woods on the hills to the west of the village. History The Latin names ''Latverum'' or ''Laverum'' appear in the year 881 in the records of the Abbey of St. Vaast at Amiens. Controversy surrounds the meaning of the name: « lavoir » according to some, « arm of a river » according to others. In 883, when the Normans sacked the abbey at Saint-Quentin, the king Carloman II of France, set up his camp at Laviers to block their passage to the sea. Noyelles-sur-Mer
Noyelles-sur-Mer (, literally ''Noyelles on Sea'') is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography Noyelles-sur-Mer is situated on the coast, facing the English Channel, on the D11 and D40 junction, some northwest of Abbeville. Railways Noyelles has a railway station on the Boulogne–Amiens line. There is also a heritage railway at Noyelles, the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme, which formed part of the Réseau des Bains de Mer system. Nouvion (; or sometimes Nouvion-en-Ponthieu) is a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. Geography Nouvion is situated north of Abbeville, between the Somme estuary and the forest of Crécy, on the D1001 (ex-N1 national) departmental road junction with the departmental road D111.
