Canterbury Country Cricket Team
The Canterbury Country cricket team represents the rural areas of the northern part of the Canterbury Region in the South Island of New Zealand. It covers the area east of the Southern Alps, between the Clarence River in the north and the Rakaia River in the south, excluding metropolitan Christchurch. It competes in the Hawke Cup and has its base in Rangiora. History Early years Cricket was played in Rangiora and Kaiapoi in the 1850s. The first North Canterbury Cricket Association was formed in Rangiora in August 1892, and the competition that season comprised six clubs: Cust, Oxford, Ashley County, Ohoka, Amberley and Woodend; Amberley won the first title. The association's name was changed to Ashley County Cricket Association in September 1896, then back to North Canterbury Cricket Association in September 1911. Rangiora Recreation Ground
Rangiora Recreation Ground (also known as the MainPower Oval through a sponsorship deal with local company MainPower) is a cricket ground in Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand, Canterbury, New Zealand. The Recreation Ground is recorded as being in existence since the early 1870s, and used for cricket since 1891. It first held a first-class cricket, first-class match when Canterbury cricket team, Canterbury played Central Districts cricket team, Central Districts in the 2003/04 State Championship#State Championship, State Championship. Arthur Carman
Arthur Herbert Carman (2 August 1902 – 28 November 1982) was a New Zealand sports journalist and writer, bookseller, publisher, pacifist, local politician, and local historian. Life and career Carman was born and died in Wellington, New Zealand. The oldest of five children, all boys, of Walter and Gertrude Carman, Arthur was born in Paparangi, Johnsonville. He attended local schools before gaining his Certificate of Proficiency in 1915, which gave him the final two years of his education at Wellington College in central Wellington, commuting by train each day. He began work with the Government Audit Office in Wellington in 1919. He studied accountancy at night, and began contributing on cricket and rugby for the Wellington newspaper '' The Evening Post''. Cricket Teams In New Zealand
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Hawke's Bay Cricket Team
The Hawke's Bay cricket team, representing the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand, played first-class cricket between 1883–84 and 1920–21, and competed in the Plunket Shield in the 1914–15 and 1920–21 seasons. The side has continued to appear in minor cricket and now competes in the Hawke Cup competition. First-class history In their first match at first-class level, against Wellington at the Basin Reserve in February 1884, Hawke's Bay were dismissed for just 32 in their second innings thanks to Joseph Firth's remarkable return of 8 for 13 from 13 four-ball overs. In their next match, in 1884–85, they beat Wellington at Napier Recreation Ground by eight wickets. They lost their next three matches, all against Wellington, before trouncing Taranaki in two matches in 1891–92. Nelson Cricket Team
Nelson cricket team is a cricket team representing the Nelson Region of New Zealand. It played first-class cricket from 1874 to 1891, and currently competes in the Hawke Cup. Playing history Cricket was first reported as being played in Nelson in the ''Nelson Examiner'' in March 1844, in a match between the Surveyors of the Land Company and Nelson. Nelson as a representative team played interprovincial cricket as early as 1862, later first playing first-class cricket in 1873-74 against Wellington at the Basin Reserve, becoming the fifth team to play first-class cricket in New Zealand. This match is also notable for having ended in a tie, the eighth time this had happened and one of sixty occasions overall that a first-class match has ended in such a result. Southland Cricket Team
The Southland cricket team represents the Southland Region of New Zealand. They compete in the Hawke Cup. Early history Southland first played interprovincial cricket in 1864, and often played against touring teams from Australia, Fiji and England. The Southland Cricket Association was formed in 1892, leading to an increase in representative matches, including the annual match against Otago, which began in 1893–94 and continued until the 1980s. In 1910–11 Southland were the first winners of the Hawke Cup. They retained it in 1911–12 but surrendered it in 1912–13 when they did not take part. Manawatu Cricket Team
The Manawatu cricket team represents the Manawatū district of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. History Cricket was played in the region in the 1870s. The Palmerston Cricket Club was formed in October 1878. The Manawatu Cricket Association was formed in 1895, made up of six clubs: Feilding, Palmerston North, Colyton, Carnarvon, Cheltenham and Birmingham. Manawatu played in the very first match in the Hawke Cup, when they defeated Wairarapa in December 1910, thanks largely to the bowling of Arthur Ongley, who took 12 wickets. They have held the Hawke Cup nine times, the first time from February 1928 to March 1930, and most recently from February 2014 to February 2015. Allan Wright (farmer)
Sir Allan Frederick Wright (25 March 1929 – 27 November 2022) was a New Zealand farming leader and businessman. He was president of Federated Farmers between 1977 and 1981, and served as the first chancellor of Lincoln University. Early life and family Wright was born in Darfield, Canterbury, on 25 March 1929, one of twin sons born to Quentin Alford Wright and Winifred Annie Wright (née Jarman). He was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch. On 22 January 1953, he married Dorothy June Netting at St Paul's Anglican Church, Papanui, and the couple went on to have five children. Wright's twin brother, Geoff, played first-class cricket for Canterbury, and was the father of New Zealand Test cricket captain John Wright. Career Wright started farming a mixed arable farm near Sheffield in 1946. The Otago Country cricket team represents the Central Otago and South Otago regions of New Zealand. It competes in the Hawke Cup. Its parent organisation is the Otago Country Cricket Association, which is based in Alexandra. Central Otago The Central Otago Cricket Association was formed in 1946. It achieved Minor Association status with the New Zealand Cricket Council in 1956. Central Otago competed in the Hawke Cup from 1963 to 2006.
