Canterbury College (Indiana)
Canterbury College was a private institution located in Danville, Indiana, United States from 1878 to 1951. The school was known as Central Normal College prior to 1946. History The college was founded in 1876 as part of the larger statewide university system in Indiana. The school was located in Ladoga, Indiana, but was moved to Danville, Indiana in 1878 after purchasing the former Danville Academy buildings. Normal Hall is the only remaining building associated with the Central Indiana Normal School at Ladoga. ''Note:'' This includes and Accompanying photographs. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The school taught traditional college courses, but primarily focused on training teachers. Canterbury College is a small liberal arts college affiliated with the University of Windsor founded by the Anglican Church of Canada. History Canterbury College was incorporated in June 1957. The College appointed its first Principal, Canon Rayson, in September 1957. Canterbury College, an Anglican College and Assumption University, a Roman Catholic University signed an affiliation agreement on November 4, 1957 in the presence of Bishops Luxton and Cody. It was the first Anglican College in the world to affiliate with a Roman Catholic University. The College purchased Canterbury House, 172 Patricia Road, St. Augustine from Clyde W. Canterbury College, Oxford (1311–1540), was a University of Oxford college, owned and run by Christ Church Priory, Canterbury. Shortly after the dissolution of the monasteries, the college's hall, chapel and other buildings were surrendered on 10 April 1540 and acquired by Christ Church. Background The Priory first sent 4 monks to study in Oxford in 1311, in a hall it had bought there near the church of St Peter-in-the-East, but the actual college was founded in 1361 by Simon Islip, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, in the parish of St Edward, opposite Oriel College. The Royal Licence was granted by the King Edward III for the foundation of College and advowson of Pagham on the 20th of October 1361. History It was established in 1928 as East Camberwell Domestic Arts School, catering for girls and offering courses up to Year 10. It became Camberwell Girls' High School in 1958, having a number of official names throughout the 1950s. In 1961 the name Canterbury Girls' High School was adopted.
