Canoeing At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's Slalom K-1
The women's K-1 canoe slalom competition at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place between 30 July and 2 August at the Lee Valley White Water Centre. The gold medal was won by Émilie Fer from France. Competition format In the heats, each competitor had two runs; the 15 athletes with the best time qualified for the semi-finals. Each semi-final consisted of one run each and the best 10 qualified for the final. The final was also one run where the canoeist with the best time won the gold medal. Lee Valley White Water Centre
Lee Valley White Water Centre (previously known as Broxbourne White Water Canoe Centre) is a white-water slalom centre, that was constructed to host the whitewater slalom, canoe slalom events of the 2012 Summer Olympics, London 2012 Olympic Games. On 9 December 2010, Anne, Princess Royal officially opened the venue which is owned by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and was orginally managed by them as well, but since April 1st 2022, is now managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) under its "Better" brand. Canoeing At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Canoeing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were contested in two main disciplines: canoe slalom, from 29 July to 2 August, and canoe sprint, from 6 to 11 August. The slalom competition was held at the Lee Valley White Water Centre and the sprint events were staged at Eton College Rowing Centre, at Dorney Lake, known as Eton Dorney. Around 330 athletes took part in 16 events. The men's 500m sprints were replaced by a 200m race; in addition, the men's C-2 500m was replaced by a women's K-1 200m sprint. This was confirmed at an International Canoe Federation board meeting at Windsor, Berkshire, on 5 December 2009. For the first time, women competed in two individual events in sprint canoeing. Because of the changes, the finals were spread over a three-day period instead of the traditional two days which had been in effect since the 1976 Games. Caroline Queen (born March 5, 1992 in Knoxville, Tennessee) is an American slalom canoer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics she competed in the K-1 event, finishing 17th in the heats, failing to qualify for the semifinals. Caroline first began paddling slalom at the age of nine, at Valley Mill Camp in her hometown of Darnestown, Maryland. She soon entered regular training in the summer of 2002, when she began working with Martin Nevaril, who would later become a US Junior National Team Coach. With Martin’s guidance, she blossomed as a young paddler. In 2006, then fourteen-year-old Queen attended her first US National team trials, when surprised the slalom community by winning Day 2 of the competition. Luuka Jones (born 18 October 1988) is a New Zealand slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. Early life Jones was born in Tauranga in 1988. Her mother Denise Jones was a fan of the British actress Audrey Hepburn and Luuka Jones was named after Hepburn's second son, Luca Dotti. Her father is Rod Jones and she has three sisters. She was brought up adjacent to the Wairoa River. She took up kayaking at age ten and received lessons from Waimarino Adventure Park nearby.
