Cannington is a village and civil parish northwest of Bridgwater in the Sedgemoor district of Somerset, England. It lies on the west bank of the River Parret, and contains the hamlet of Edstock. History The parish formerly included part of the village of Combwich, with its port and ferry terminal. In 1881 the parish contained . The Saxon name of this village was ''Caninganmaersees'' or ''Cantuctone''. ''Cantuc'' was an Old English word for a ridge, ''ton'' a settlement. The Battle of Cynwit took place in 878, and Cannington Camp, a Bronze Age and Iron Age hill fort, (also called Cynwir or Cynwit Castle) has been suggested as the most likely location for it. The Cannington Camp site, of recognized archaeological importance, has been partly destroyed by Castle Hill Quarry in its limestone quarrying activities. Cannington is a community in Brock Township, Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. The town is on the Beaver River. History Originally part of the original Brock Township, (historic map) Cannington was first settled in 1833. It was first known as McCaskill's Mills after a local mill-owning family. In 1849, a post office was opened, at which point the settlement was renamed Cannington after former British foreign secretary and Prime Minister George Canning (1770–1827). Cannington separated from Brock Township in 1878 when it was incorporated as a Village. When Durham Region was created in 1974, Cannington was amalgamated with the original Brock Township, Thorah Township and the Village of Beaverton to create the newly expanded Township of Brock. Cannington Manor Provincial Park is an historic park in the RM of Moose Mountain in the south-east corner of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. An aristocratic English colony was established at the site in 1882 by Captain Edward Michell Pierce. It became a provincial park in 1986. Cannington Manor is located west and north of Highway 603. The Colony is 16 kilometres south-east of Moose Mountain Provincial Park, and south of Moosomin. Captain Pierce established an agricultural college and attracted ''remittance men'' as students for £100 a year. The intention of the college was to instruct these bachelor sons of wealthy families to farm and homestead in the last best west. The brothers Ernest, Billy, and Bertie Beckton constructed "Didsbury", ranch house within Cannington Manor colony. The cultural and recreational life emulated English upper class society. Cannington Lake, also known as Cannington Lake Resort, is a hamlet within the Rural Municipality of Moose Mountain No. 63 in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan at the north-east corner of Cannington Lake. Listed as a designated place by Statistics Canada, the hamlet had a population of 0 in the Canada 2011 Census. The resort is on the north-eastern shore of the lake and has over 20 lots owned, with six occupied cabins. The 2016 Canada Census does not list a population for Cannington Lake, only for the RM of Moose Mountain, which was 492 in 2016. History Cannington Lake was once a popular resort as the population would grow during the summer months. Until the 1980s, it was home to several campsites, barbecue areas, two boat launches, a beach, several rentable cabins, a miniature golf course, and other services. Cannington is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in the extreme southeast corner of the province, this constituency was redrawn to include the former district of Souris for the 18th Saskatchewan general election in 1975. The original Cannington constituency, one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905, was named after the Cannington Manor settlement located in the region. Currently the safest seat for the Saskatchewan Party, it is arguably one of the most conservative ridings in the province – having never elected a member of the CCF or NDP.
