Cannich Wildfire
The Cannich wildfire burned for two weeks, starting on 28 May 2023 in the Scottish Highlands, close to the village of Cannich in the Highland council area. No one died, but two firefighters were injured and airlifted to hospital on 30 May when their vehicle overturned at the site; they were both discharged the following day. Events The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted of a large fire at 12:46 p.m. on 28 May 2023. On 31 May, a long plume of smoke from the fire was detected drifting towards Loch Ness from space by NASA. At its height, nine appliances were tackling the fire, as well as a helicopter to water bomb the affected area. A 'very high' wildfire warning covering much of Scotland, which had been in place since 26 May, was extended to 5 June. Cannich
Cannich (Gaelic: ''Canaich'') is a village at the southern end of Strathglass, in the Highlands of Scotland, about west of the city of Inverness. It is at the furthest point of the A831 that loops around the Aird from Beauly to Drumnadrochit. It is home to Strathglass Shinty Club, one of the oldest organised shinty clubs in the world. The game of shinty and the Strathglass club owe much to Captain Chisholm. He chaired a meeting in the Glen Affric Hotel, Cannich, on 27 January 1880, at which he was elected the first Chief. Duncan Chisholm, Raonabhraid, was voted in as secretary and treasurer, and 10 Chieftains representing each of the districts in the Strath were also elected. The club's first honorary president was The Chisholm, Erchless Castle. Carsphairn
Carsphairn ( gd, An Còrsa Feàrna) is a village in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is located about halfway between Dalmellington and St John's Town of Dalry, on the A713 road. Carsphairn annual sheep show is held in the village. Cairnsmore of Carsphairn is to the north east of the village in the Carsphairn and Scaur Hills. To the west is the ridge of the Rhinns of Kells in the Galloway Hills. The village has many features ranging from an ancient stone circle to a nuclear listening post (now disused), and includes local amenities such as a shop, tearoom, a primary school and a village hall.
