Cannelton is a city in Troy Township, Perry County, in the U.S. state of Indiana, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,563 at the 2010 census. Cannelton, which was the smallest incorporated city in the state until 2010, was formerly the county seat of Perry County until the seat was relocated to Tell City. History The name Cannelton was adopted in 1844, and is derived from the cannel coal that was once mined in the area. A post office has been in operation at Cannelton since 1844. The Cannelton Cotton Mill, Cannelton Historic District, and St. Luke's Episcopal Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cannelton Historic District is a national historic district located at Cannelton, Perry County, Indiana. The district encompasses 178 contributing buildings, 42 contributing structures, and 2 contributing objects in the central business district and surrounding residential and industrial areas of Cannelton. The area developed between 1837 and 1936, and includes notable examples of Gothic Revival, Late Victorian, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Cannelton is an unincorporated community located in Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, approximately three miles west of Darlington. Cannelton is an unincorporated community in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. Cannelton is northeast of Smithers, along Smithers Creek. Cannelton has a post office with ZIP code 25036. The community was named for the deposits of cannel coal in the area. Cannelton was established in 1849. Cannel coal was discovered in 1848. Ben Burdette, who was working on Col. Aaron Stockton lumber enterprise on the mountain, discovered cannel coal. Cannel coal was discovered to have a very high oil content and that made it very valuable. Col. Aaron Stockton started mining cannel coal and shipping it on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It was the first established town in Montgomery-Smithers vicinity. Cannelton Cotton Mill, also known as Indiana Cotton Mill, is a National Historic Landmark of the United States located in Cannelton, Indiana, United States. Built in 1849 as an effort to expand textile milling out of New England, it was the largest industrial building west of the Allegheny Mountains, designed by Thomas Alexander Tefft, an early industrial architect.
