''Canned Fishing'' is a 1938 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Gordon Douglas. It was the 162nd ''Our Gang'' short (163rd episode, 74th talking short, and 75th talking episode) that was released. Plot Again concocting an elaborate hooky-playing scheme, Spanky places a block of ice on the chest of his pal Alfalfa, who spent the night with him at his house. The strategy this time is to convince their mothers that Alfalfa has a bad cold or the flu, and that Spanky must remain by his side to nurse him back to health. In fact, the boys plan to go fishing the moment their mothers' backs are turned—and the scheme might have worked, had Buckwheat and Porky not spilled the beans to Spanky's mother. Vowing to teach the boys a lesson, she orders Spanky and Alfalfa to remain in the house all day and look after Spanky's kid brother Junior. Gordon Douglas (director)
Gordon Douglas Brickner (December 15, 1907 – September 29, 1993) was an American film director and actor, who directed many different genres of films over the course of a five-decade career in motion pictures. Early life Born Gordon Douglas Brickner in New York City, he began his career as a child actor, appearing in some films directed by Maurice Costello. He also worked at MGM as a book-keeper. Career Hal Roach and ''Our Gang'' As a teenager, Douglas got a job at the Hal Roach Studios, working in the office and appearing in bit parts in various Hal Roach films. He made walk-on appearances in at least three ''Our Gang'' shorts: ''Teacher's Pet (1930 film), Teacher's Pet'' (1930), ''Big Ears (film), Big Ears'' (1931) and ''Birthday Blues'' (1932). Gary Jasgur (November 8, 1935 – August 22, 1994) was an American former child actor, most notable for appearing in the ''Our Gang'' short film series from 1937 to 1939. Career Dark-haired Jasgur was cast as "Junior", the infant brother of either Spanky or Darla. In his two years with the ''Our Gang'' series, Jasgur did not have a single word of dialogue, yet managed to make life miserable for his older sibling. He was memorable as the pint-sized, banana-eating timekeeper in '' The Pigskin Palooka'' and billed as the "world's smallest man" in '' Clown Princes''.
