''Cats and Dogs'' (Italian: ''Cani e gatti'') is a 1952 Italian comedy film directed by Leonardo De Mitri and starring Titina De Filippo, Umberto Spadaro and Antonella Lualdi. The film's sets were designed by the art director Franco Lolli. Plot In a village, the pharmacist and the innkeeper have an intense rivalry fuelled by the fact that they were once romantically involved many years before. To spite her rival, the innkeeper arranges to have her nephew set up a second pharmacy to take business away him. Unbeknownst to them a romance is developing between the younger generation of the families. Silvio Bagolini (4 August 1914 – 26 September 1976) was an Italian film actor. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1936 and 1973. Life and career Born in Bologna, Bagolini studied architecture at the Bologna University, without graduating. He made his acting debut with a leading role in a 1934 experimental amateur film, ''Verde nei prati''. Moved to Rome, he enrolled at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. In 1936 he made his professional debut in the film ''La danza delle lancette'', and from then he started an intense career as a character actor, often cast in humorous roles. Pietro Carloni (28 October 1896 – 3 August 1968) was an Italian stage and film actor. Life and career Born in Taurisano, Lecce into a family of actors, Carloni debuted on stage at young age in the theatrical company held by Ernesto Murolo. In 1921 he met on stage Titina De Filippo, whom he married one year later and with whom he started a long professional association, appearing in almost all her stage works. Carloni was also active in films and in television miniseries, mainly cast in character roles. His siblings Ester, Maria, Adelina and Ettore were fellow actors. Marisa Merlini (6 August 1923 – 27 July 2008) was an Italian character actress active in Italy's post-World War II cinema. Merlini appeared in over fifty films during her career, which spanned from World War II to 2005. In Luigi Comencini's 1953 film ''Pane, amore e fantasia'', she portrayed Annarella, a village midwife, who marries the local police marshal, played by Vittorio De Sica.
