Cangas, Pontevedra
Cangas, also known as Cangas do Morrazo, is a seaside resort in southwestern Galicia, Spain. It is both a town and municipality in the province of Pontevedra. Its area is about 38,1 km² and has a population of around 26,087 inhabitants. Government The municipality of Cangas is administered by a mayor-council government, the Concello de Cangas, which meets in the Casa do Concello on Avenida Castelao. After the local elections of 2015 the municipality is governed by a coalition of Cangas Left Alternative (coalition of United Left and the FPG), the Galician Nationalist Bloc and Assembly for Unity (ASpUN). Cangas de Onís ( Asturian: ''Cangues d'Onís'' "valleys of Onís"'' Canga'' (plural ''cangues'') is an Asturian word for "valley, canyon".) is a municipality in the eastern part of the province and autonomous community of Asturias in the northwest of Spain. The capital of the municipality is also Cangas de Onís. More than seventy square kilometres of the ''conceyu'' form part of the Parque nacional de los Picos de Europa. History Within the park is the village of Covadonga, where the battle of Covadonga (about 722), the first major victory by a Christian military force in Iberia after the Islamic conquest, marks the starting-point of the Reconquista. Cangas is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP), traditionally called a '' Vino de calidad con Indicación Geográfica''for wines located in the autonomous region of Asturias. This is one step below the mainstream Denominación de Origen quality wines and one step above the less stringent Vino de la Tierra wines on the quality ladder. Johan De Cangas
Johan de Cangas (or ''Xohan de Cangas'' in an anachronistically modernized Galician form) was a ''jograr'' or non-noble troubadour, probably active during the thirteenth century. He seems to have been from—or associated with – Cangas do Morrazo, a small town of Pontevedra, Galicia (Spain). Only three of his songs survive. All three are ''cantigas de amigo'' and in each of them the girl mentions a religious site (''ermida'') at ''San Momede do Mar'' ("San Momede of the Sea"). These references to the sea may be symbolic (symbolizing sexuality) as they are real (given the geography), but they have earned this poet the designation of "singer of the sea". In the first text, a girl asks her mother for permission to go see her boyfriend at ''San Momede do Mar''; in the second she informs her mother that the boyfriend did not come and she has surely lost him; in the third she asks her boyfriend to meet her there, and not to break his word to her again.
