1999 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 52nd Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday, 27 March 1999. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Labor Party, led by premier Bob Carr won a second term with a 7% swing against the Liberal Party and National Party, led by Kerry Chikarovski. The poll was the first to be held after two key changes to the electoral system. In 1997, the number of electoral districts was reduced from 99 to 93. In 1995, fixed four-year terms were introduced. Doug Shedden (politician)
Douglas James Shedden (17 December 1937 − 13 January 2020) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Bankstown in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1987 to 1999. Shedden was born in Casino, and worked as an electronics firm manager before entering politics. On 7 October 1961 he married Patricia Lewis, with whom he had a daughter. He sat on Bankstown City Council from 1977 to 1987, and was deputy mayor 1980–83. A prominent member of the local Labor Party, he was president of the Greenacre branch for twenty years. In 1987, the member for the local state seat of Bankstown, Ric Mochalski, resigned after being charged with involvement in the collapse of a property trust. Shedden was selected as the Labor candidate for the by-election, and was elected fairly easily, although independent candidate Kevin Ryan achieved 18.6% of the vote. Max Willis
Max Frederick Willis, (6 December 1935 – 18 August 2021) was an Australian politician and senior Army Reserve officer. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1970 to 1999. His brother Sir Eric Willis was briefly Premier of New South Wales in 1976. Born in Murwillumbah, Willis was the son of Archibald Clarence Willis, a butter factory hand, and Vida Buttenshaw. He was educated at Murwillumbah High School and then received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney in 1957. Following his admission as a solicitor in 1958, Willis became a partner with Serisier, Willis and Bowring in Miranda until 1971. On 8 August 1970, he married Wendy Patricia Booth, with whom he had four children. Willis had joined the Citizen Military Forces in 1953, and was involved in the Army Reserve for thirty years, attaining the rank of brigadier. Marlene Goldsmith
Marlene Mary Herbert Goldsmith (29 September 1942 – 13 April 2000) was an Australian politician. She was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Born Marlene Herbert in Gunnedah to parents Cecil and Esme, and brothers Warwick and Mark. Marlene studied to be a teacher, receiving a Bachelor of Arts She received a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1960. resulting in teaching at St. Mary's College, Gunnedah where she was held in high regard. She was then awarded a teaching scholarship to the University of Minnesota in 1978 (and a PhD), and a Thurston Scholarship in Foundations of Education in 1981. She taught in both the United States and in New South Wales, and was also a research consultant. She married Ian Goldsmith, with whom she had a daughter. Virginia Chadwick
Virginia Anne Chadwick AO (19 December 194417 September 2009) was a Liberal Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1978 to 1999. She was the first NSW female Minister for Education; the first female President of the New South Wales Legislative Council; and Chair and CEO of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Wagga Wagga is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The district has been held by MP Joe McGirr since the September 2018 by-election. Wagga Wagga is a regional electorate. It entirely covers two local government areas: the City of Wagga Wagga and Lockhart Shire. It also covers part of the Snowy Valleys Council, which was established following the merger of Tumut Shire and Tumbarumba Shire. History Wagga Wagga was created in 1894. Joseph John Schipp (21 March 1932 – 23 November 2017) was an Australian politician in the New South Wales Government. He was the Liberal member for Wagga Wagga in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1975 to 1999. Personal life Schipp was born in Mudgee and named for his father, Joseph William. Electoral District Of Gordon (New South Wales)
Gordon was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. Originally created in 1904, replacing Willoughby. With the introduction of proportional representation, it was absorbed into the five-member electorate of Ryde, along with Burwood and Willoughby. It was recreated in 1927, but was abolished in 1999. Jeremy Stirton Prevost Kinross (born 18 December 1959) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal Party member for Gordon in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1992 to 1999. Jim Kaldis
James Kaldis (20 August 1932 – 3 March 2007) was a Greek-born Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1978 to 1999. Kaldis was born in Greece, migrated to Australia in 1950, and became a citizen in 1954. He worked as a journalist and newspaper editor, and then as an actor and stage director. He was a founding member and licensee of the radio station 2EA (later SBS Radio), and directed the Greek programmes for the station. Dorothy May Isaksen (née Shepherd; born 13 April 1930) is a former Australian politician. She was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1978 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1999. She was born in North Sydney, the daughter of Edward Chapman Shepherd, a foreman, and his wife Beatrice Taylor.
