Candidates Tournament 2024
The 2024 Candidates Tournament will be an eight-player chess tournament, held to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2024. It is scheduled to take place at The Great Hall in Toronto, Canada, from April 3–22, 2024. The event will be held alongside the Women's Candidates Tournament 2024, Women's Candidates Tournament. Candidates Tournament
The Candidates Tournament (or in some periods Candidates Matches) is a chess tournament organized by FIDE, chess's international governing body, since 1950, as the final contest to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship. The winner of the Candidates earns the right to a match for the World Championship against the incumbent World Champion. Before 1993 it was contested as a triennial tournament; almost always held every third year from 1950 to 1992 inclusive. After the split of the World Championship in the early 1990s, the cycles were disrupted, even after the reunification of the titles in 2006. Since 2013 it has settled into a 2-year cycle: qualification for Candidates during the odd numbered year, Candidates played early in the even numbered year, and the World Championship match played late in the even numbered year. Dommaraju Gukesh (born 29 May 2006), better known as Gukesh D, is an Indian chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he is the third-youngest person in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster, which FIDE awarded him in March 2019. On 16 October 2022, at the age of 16, he became the youngest player ever to defeat current world champion Magnus Carlsen, when he beat Carlsen in a game at the Aimchess Rapid Tournament. Early life Gukesh was born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father, Rajnikanth, is an ear, nose and throat surgeon, and his mother, Padma, is a microbiologist. 2023 FIDE Circuit
The 2023 FIDE Circuit is a system comprising the top chess tournaments in 2023, which serves as a qualification path for the Candidates Tournament 2024. Players receive points based on their performance and the strength of the tournament. A player's final Circuit score is the sum of their five best results of the year. The winner of the Circuit qualifies for the Candidates Tournament 2024 in Toronto, Canada, the winner of which qualifies for the World Chess Championship 2024. He attained the title of grandmaster in January 2013, becoming the 30th player from India to do so. he is the second highest rated player in India (behind Viswanathan Anand. The FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 is an upcoming chess tournament that forms part of the qualification cycle for the World Chess Championship 2024. It will be an 11-round Swiss-system tournament with 114 players competing from 25 October to 5 November 2023 in the Isle of Man.
