1980 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 23 February 1980 to elect all 55 members to the Legislative Assembly and 16 members to the 32-seat Legislative Council. The Liberal- National Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir Charles Court, won a third term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Ron Davies. The election produced very little in terms of the balance of the parties in Parliament—Labor won Kimberley from the Liberals in the Assembly, and a North Province seat in the Council, but lost two Council seats to the Liberals—one each in North Metropolitan and South-East Metropolitan. However, Labor received a substantial swing overall, increasing majorities in seats it already held, and reducing Liberal majorities in western suburban seats and pushing the key seats of Bunbury and Pilbara into marginal status. Electoral District Of Albany
Albany is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Albany is named for the port and regional city of Western Australia which falls within its borders. It is one of the oldest electorates in Western Australia, with its first member having been elected in the inaugural 1890 elections of the Legislative Assembly. It is regarded as a swinging seat, and has been held by the Labor Party since the 2001 election, at which Peter Watson was first elected. Watson announced his retirement prior to the 2021 election and was succeeded in the seat by Labor Party colleague, Rebecca Stephens. John Sibson (16 January 1930 – 11 December 2014) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1973 to 1983, representing the seat of Bunbury. Philip "Phil" John Smith (born 24 October 1938) is a former Australian politician and teacher. Born in West Perth, Phil graduated from Claremont Teacher's College in 1957 before completing a Bachelor of Education at University of Western Australia in 1963 (as well as being awarded a Full Blue for Athletics). Bunbury is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district, taking in the city of Bunbury has existed continuously since 1890, being one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 general election. From 1974 to 2005 the seat was always held by the party of government, making it an effective bellwether. Two early Premiers of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest and Sir Newton Moore, held Bunbury during their time in office. Brian Thomas Burke (born 25 February 1947) is an Australian former politician who was the 23rd premier of Western Australia from 25 February 1983 to his resignation on 25 February 1988. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 30 March 1973 to 25 February 1988, representing the electoral districts of Balga and Balcatta at various points, and was the leader of the Australian Labor Party in Western Australia from 18 September 1981 to 25 February 1988. Burke studied law at the University of Western Australia for one year before dropping out. During the 1960s and early 1970s, he worked as a journalist for ''The West Australian'' newspaper, 6PM radio station, and Seven News Perth. Balcatta is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based in Perth's northern suburbs. The National Party of Australia (WA) Inc, branded The Nationals WA, is a political party in Western Australia. It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament. Prior to the election, the National Party was sitting in the crossbench and the Liberal Party was the sole opposition party. The election resulted in the National Party winning more seats than the Liberal Party and gaining official opposition status. Ken McIver
Kenneth Finlay McIver (26 October 1928 – 23 September 1988) was an Australian politician who served in the Parliament of Western Australia between 1968 and 1988. He represented Northam and Avon for the Labor Party. Prior to entering politics, McIver spent over 20 years as a train driver with the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR). When the Fremantle line reopened in 1983, McIver drove the first passenger train along the line with Premier Brian Burke in the driver's cab with him. Electoral District Of Avon
Avon was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1911 to 2008. The name of the district was changed to Avon Valley in 1950, but reverted to its original name in 1962. For most of its history, Avon was a Country Party (now Nationals) seat. However, at the 1974 state election, when it merged with the neighbouring safe Labor seat of Northam, Avon was held by Labor's Ken McIver until 1986, when it was won by the newly reunified Nationals. A boundary redistribution occasioned by electoral reforms in 1987 brought in more rural areas and ensured its continuing safety for the National Party. Ascot was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1968 to 1989. The district was based in the eastern suburbs of Perth. First contested at the 1968 state election, its first member was Merv Toms, hitherto the member for Bayswater, who finished his career as Speaker of the Assembly. He died on 8 October 1971 while exercising his casting vote for the Government on the floor of the Assembly, where the Government and Opposition were evenly divided.
