1944 New South Wales State Election
The 1944 New South Wales state election was held on 27 May 1944. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1940 redistribution. The election was for all of the 90 seats in the Legislative Assembly. Issues The Labor government of William McKell faced its first challenge at a general election in May 1944. The campaign was overshadowed by the course of World War II and the Sydney Morning Herald noted that in such an uncertain environment it was difficult for any party to make extensive plans for the future. This was particularly the case as many of the responsibilities of the states had been usurped by the Commonwealth Government under emergency war powers. McKell's three years in government had enhanced his reputation as a moderate and cautious leader. Ben Wade (politician)
Benjamin Martin Wade (12 July 1883 – 20 December 1958) was an Australian politician. Born at Tenterden to grazier William Martin Wade and Ann Hogan, he attended school at Tenterden and Inverell before finding work at the Lands Department in Narrabri. He married Bertha Matilda Oberle on 17 April 1917, with whom he had three children; she died in 1923. He remarried Claire Vaughan Reece, ''née'' Williams, on 10 January 1927, with whom he also had three children; she died on 26 March 1952 in Rome. His final marriage was to Lillian May Sanderson on 21 May 1953. After resigning from the Lands Department to teach at Inverell, Wade travelled to Sydney and entered the building trade, establishing his own Inverell business in 1905. He became a local grazier, and was an alderman at Inverell from 1921 to 1923, 1948 to 1952 and 1953 to 1958 (serving as mayor 1956–58). Roy Heferen
Stephen Roy Heferen (2 June 1898 – 9 June 1961) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1941 until 1950. During his parliamentary career he was a member of the Labor Party (ALP) but sat as an Independent Labor member between March and May 1950. Early life Heferen was born in Coonabarabran, New South Wales. He was the son of a farmer, and after an elementary education at Moree Superior Public School worked as butcher's boy and shearer. He was a foreman with the New South Wales Government Railways between 1922 and 1926. Heferen became a wheat farmer after buying land on the Boggabilla-Camurra Railway line at Croppa Creek near Moree. He was active in local community organizations including the Aboriginal Protection Board, the Wheat Growers Association and the Farmers and Settlers Association. James McGirr
James "Jim" McGirr, Justice of the peace, JP (6 February 1890 – 27 October 1957) was the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Premier of New South Wales from 6 February 1947 to 3 April 1952. A Catholic, McGirr was the seventh son of John Patrick McGirr, farmer and Irish immigrant, and Mary McGirr, whose maiden name was O'Sullivan. Born in Parkes, New South Wales, Parkes, New South Wales, he grew up on a dairy farm near that town. Communist Party Of Australia
The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian political party founded in 1920. The party existed until roughly 1991, with its membership and influence having been in a steady decline since its peak in 1945. Like most communist parties in the west, the party was heavily involved in the labour movement and the trade unions. Its membership, popularity and influence grew significantly during most of the interwar period before reaching its climax in 1945, where the party achieved a membership of slightly above 22,000 members. Although the party did not achieve a federal MP, Fred Paterson was elected to the Parliament of Queensland (for Bowen) at the 1944 state election. Mary Quirk
Mary Lily May Quirk (7 December 1880 – 4 March 1952) was an Australian politician. Born in Coonamble, New South Wales, Coonamble in New South Wales to farmer Julius Deal and his wife Emma Margaretta White, she was educated at Rozelle, New South Wales, Rozelle before commencing work as a domestic servant. She was later employed as a shop assistant with Grace Brothers, leading to her membership of the Shop Assistants' Union. On 28 September 1898 she married John Kelly, with whom she had three daughters and a son. After Kelly's death in 1926, she married Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Party politician John Quirk (politician), John Quirk on 9 February 1927. Following her husband's death in 1938, Quirk was elected in 1939 to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Electoral district of Balmain, Balmain, which she represented until 1950. John Thomas Lang (21 December 1876 – 27 September 1975), usually referred to as J. T. Lang during his career and familiarly known as "Jack" and nicknamed "The Big Fella", was an Australian politician, mainly for the New South Wales Branch of the Labor Party. He twice served as the 23rd Premier of New South Wales from 1925 to 1927 and again from 1930 to 1932. He was dismissed by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Philip Game, at the climax of the 1932 constitutional crisis and resoundingly lost the resulting election and subsequent elections as Leader of the Opposition.
