1885 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1885 New South Wales colonial election was held between 16 October and 31 October 1885. This election was for all of the 122 seats in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and it was conducted in 37 single-member constituencies, 24 2-member constituencies, seven 3-member constituencies and four 4-member constituencies, all with a first past the post system. Suffrage was limited to adult male British subjects, resident in New South Wales. The previous parliament of New South Wales was dissolved on 7 October 1885 by the Governor, Lord Augustus Loftus, on the advice of the Premier, George Dibbs. There was no recognisable party structure at this election, the last election for which this was the case; instead the government was determined by a loose, shifting factional system. Dibbs had succeeded Alexander Stuart two weeks before the election was held, and maintained a fragile grip on power after the election until 22 December, when he was defeated by Sir John Robertson. John Harris (New South Wales Politician)
John Harris (10 August 18387 November 1911) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Maghera in County Londonderry to John Harris and Nancy Ann McKee. His family migrated to Sydney in 1842. He attended the University of Sydney, but left before graduating to manage the property he had inherited from his father. In 1869 he married Lizzie Henrietta Dingle Page; they had eight children. He was a Sydney City Councillor from 1873 to 1883, from 1885 to 1900 and from 1902 to 1911, serving as Mayor from 1881 to 1883 and from 1888 to 1889, known for reforming the council and with a reputation for honesty. Alexander Stuart (Australian Politician)
Sir Alexander Stuart (21 March 1824 – 16 June 1886) was Premier of New South Wales from 5 January 1883 to 7 October 1885. Early years Stuart was born at Edinburgh, the son of Alexander Stuart and his wife Mary, ''née'' McKnight. Stuart was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and attended the University of Edinburgh, but did not graduate. On leaving school Stuart worked in merchant's office at Leith and at Glasgow. Then Stuart worked as manager of the North of Ireland Linen Mills. In 1845 Stuart worked for the mercantile and banking house Carr, Tagore and Company in Calcutta, India. David Ryrie
David Ryrie (16 August 1829 – 13 July 1893) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to pastoralist Stewart Ryrie and Isabella Cassels. A pastoralist himself, he ran a number of properties with his brother Alexander. On 8 November 1865 he married Ellen Eliza Faunce, with whom he had eleven children. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Monaro in an 1884 by-election, but did not re-contest the general election the following year. Ryrie died in Sydney in 1893. William McCourt
William Joseph McCourt (1 March 1851 – 22 June 1913) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in County Monaghan to shoemaker James McCourt and Bridget Smith. He arrived in New South Wales with his parents in 1852 and attended Wollongong Public School. He was apprenticed to a printer after leaving school, and was also a successful land speculator. In 1882 he married Emily Elizabeth, with whom he had six children. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1882 as the member for Camden. He lost his seat in 1885 but was re-elected in 1887. A free trader, he transferred to Bowral in 1894 and to Wollondilly in 1904. George Loughnan
George Cumberlege Loughnan (1842 – 18 January 1896) was an Australian politician. He was born at Hobart in Van Diemen's Land; his father John Michael Loughnan was a captain in the 10th Bengal Lancers. His father farmed at Gippsland in Victoria. Loughnan was educated at Hobart and at Stonyhurst in England. He married Agnes Mcrae. In 1872 he purchased property of his own; he also worked as a stock and station agent. Electoral District Of Hume
Hume was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales established in 1859 in the Albury area, named after Hamilton Hume. It did not include the town of Albury after the creation of the electoral district of Albury in 1880. From 1880 to 1894, it elected two members. Leyser Levin
Leyser Levin (1830 – 26 January 1908) was a Prussian-born Australian politician. Little is known of his early life. He married his wife Johanna in England and had seven children. By the time he entered politics he was a storekeeper in Corowa. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Hume. Re-elected in 1882, he did not re-contest in 1885. Murrumbidgee is a former electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, named after the Murrumbidgee River. History Until its abolition, Murrumbidgee and Parramatta were the only electorates to have existed continuously since the first Legislative Assembly election in 1856, although before 1913 it was called ''The Murrumbidgee''. Auber Jones
Auber George Jones (1832 – 30 December 1887) was an Australian grazier and newspaper owner who represented Murrumbidgee for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1882 to 1885. Born in Jericho, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), Jones moved to Melbourne and then to New South Wales to manage a station near Wagga Wagga. He became a wealthy pastoralist and held numerous properties in Lachlan and on the Bogan River during the 1860s and 1870s. Jones and Thomas Darlow established the ''Wagga Wagga Advertiser'' (now the '' Daily Advertiser'') in 1868. Life Auber George Jones was born in 1832, in Jericho, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania).
