Candida (song)
"Candida" was the first single released by the American pop music group Dawn, with vocals by Tony Orlando, in July 1970. The song, written by Irwin Levine and Toni Wine, was produced by Dave Appell and Hank Medress for Bell Records. Appell and Medress originally recorded another singer on the track, but decided that a different vocal approach would be preferable. Medress then approached Orlando to do the vocals. Orlando had been a professional singer in the early 1960s, but now worked as a music publishing manager for Columbia Records. Although initially worried about losing his job at Columbia, Orlando eventually agreed to lend his voice to the track. "Candida" became a worldwide hit, reaching number one in five countries, and the top ten in many others, including number 3 in the USA. Jimmy Tennant, better known as Jimmy Velvet, was an early American soft rock, soft rock and roll singing, vocalist, during the 1960s. His most popular singles were "We Belong Together (Robert & Johnny song), We Belong Together" and "It's Almost Tomorrow". History Tennant was born in Jacksonville, Florida, where he became involved in music entertainment. It was there he met Elvis Presley and they became lifelong close friends. After Elvis' death, Tennant operated an Elvis memorabilia museum in Memphis for about twenty years. Musicor Records was a New York City-based record label, active during the 1960s and 1970s. The label was founded by songwriter Aaron Schroeder and distributed by United Artists Records. In 1965, UA employee and A&R man Arthur Talmadge (a co-founder of Mercury Records years earlier) started his own Talmadge Productions company and, along with fellow UA employee/A&R man Harold "Pappy" Daily, bought the Musicor label from UA. The Musicor catalog is today owned by Gusto Records. Philip Frederick Margo (April 1, 1942 – November 13, 2021) was an American musician and author who was a longtime member of The Tokens, along with his brother Mitch. They are best known for their hit recording of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" which rose to #1 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and remained there for three weeks in 1961. Biography Margo was born in Brooklyn on April 1, 1942, to Leon and Ruth (née Becker) Margules. He was of Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jewish origin from The Ottoman Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire, and The Russian Empire. Margo authored the 2010 science fiction novel, ''The Null Quotient''. Joyce Vincent Wilson (born December 14, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American singer, best known as part of the group Tony Orlando and Dawn. Wilson began her career in Detroit providing background vocals on Motown and Golden World recordings. She met Telma Hopkins during this time and the two provided background vocals at Holland–Dozier–Holland's Invictus/Hot Wax Records.
