Cananea Reyes
Benjamín "Cananea" Reyes Chávez (February 18, 1937 — November 11, 1991) was a Mexican professional baseball player and manager who spent one season — — as a coach for the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball. Born in Nacozari in Sonora, Mexico, Reyes was a third baseman, outfielder and pitcher during his six-year playing career in Mexican minor league baseball, including two seasons with the Charros de Jalisco of the Mexican League. His managing career began in 1968 and in 1971 he became pilot of the Charros for three seasons, before switching in 1974 to the Diablos Rojos del México, whom he managed for 16 years (1974–80; 1983–91) and had only one losing campaign. In 20 years as a Triple-A Mexican League manager, Reyes compiled a winning percentage of .568. Reyes' one season in MLB was the strike-shortened 1981 campaign. In baseball, the field manager (commonly referred to as the manager) is the equivalent of a head coach who is responsible for overseeing and making final decisions on all aspects of on-field team strategy, lineup selection, training and instruction. William Stanley Mazeroski (born September 5, 1936), nicknamed "Maz" and "The Glove", is an American former second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played his entire career for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1956 to 1972. Maurice Morning Wills (October 2, 1932 – September 19, 2022) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1959 through 1966 and the latter part of 1969 through 1972 as a shortstop and switch-hitter; he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967 and 1968, and the Montreal Expos the first part of 1969. 1981 Baseball Strike
The 1981 Major League Baseball strike was the first work stoppage in Major League Baseball since the 1972 Major League Baseball strike that resulted in regular season games being cancelled. Overall, it was the fourth work stoppage since 1972, but actions in 1973, 1976, and 1980 did not result in any regular season games being cancelled. The strike began on June 12 and forced the cancellation of 713 games (or 38 percent of the Major League schedule) in the middle of the regular season. The two sides reached an agreement on July 31, and play resumed on August 9 with the All-Star Game, with regular season play resuming one day later. An estimated US$146 million was lost in player salaries, ticket sales, broadcast revenues, and concession revenues. Mexican League (baseball)
The Mexican League (, ) is a professional baseball league based in Mexico and the oldest running professional league in the country. The league has 18 teams organized in two divisions, North and South. Teams play 114 games each season. Five teams in each division advance to a four-round postseason tournament that culminates in the Serie del Rey, a best-of-seven championship series between the two division champions. The Mexican League has two affiliated minor leagues, the Liga Norte de México and Mexican Academy League.
