Canal Estate
A canal estate, canal development, waterway estate or marine suburb is a residential Subdivision (land), subdivision made up of Canal, canals and Land reclamation, reclaimed land, such that many or all of the lots can incorporate a private mooring or boat ramp. Canal estates are typically constructed on Floodplain, floodplains or Swamp, swampland in Estuary, estuaries, providing ready access to larger waterways and the ocean. To build the estate, civil contractors will dredge parts of the site to create deep, navigable channels, and use the resulting fill to form islands and headlands above the flood level. The resulting street layout shows a distinctive 'finger' pattern. Canal estates are distinct from earlier canal cities such as Venice and Amsterdam in that the channels serve a purely recreational, as distinct from commercial or security, purpose. Kawana Waters, Queensland
Kawana Waters is an urban centre on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, between Caloundra and Maroochydore along the Coral Sea coast. It was originally the estate development name and has passed into common usage, but it is not officially a town nor a locality. Isle of Capri is a neighbourhood within the suburb of Surfers Paradise in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. History The area served as a sugar harvest for the nearby Benowa Sugar Mill in the late 1800s and early 1900s before becoming a dairy. In the 1950s, local Italian-Australian Efim Zola began a canal development project which involved raising unused farmland and renamed the area Isle of Capri after Capri island in Italy. Sir Andrew Bruce Small OStJ (11 December 1895 – 1 May 1980) was an Australian businessman and politician. In Melbourne, he developed Malvern Star bicycles into a household name in Australia, then retired to the Gold Coast, Queensland, where he developed property, and as Mayor of the Gold Coast, promoted the area to Australia and the world as a family friendly holiday destination through the bikini-clad meter maids in Surfers Paradise. Background Bruce Small was born in Ryde, New South Wales, in 1895. Karl Langer (architect)
Karl Langer (1903–1969) was an Austrian-born architect in Queensland, Australia. A number of his works are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Early life in Austria Karl Langer was born in Vienna in 1903, where he lived until emigrating to Australia in 1939 with his wife Gertrude. Karl studied architecture in Vienna, most notably in the Master Class run by Peter Behrens, at the Viennese Academy graduating in 1926. During this time Karl worked in the office of Josef Frank, who was to become well known in Swedish modernism, and later in the office of Schmidt and Aichinger. In 1928 he was appointed the architect in charge of Behrens Vienna office, where he designed and supervised important works such as the tobacco factory in Linz, Austria.
