2002 Progressive Conservative Party Of Ontario Leadership Election
The 2002 Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership election was a leadership election called in the fall of 2001 when Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Premier Mike Harris announced his intention to resign. The candidates to succeed Harris were Elizabeth Witmer, Tony Clement, Ernie Eves, Jim Flaherty and Chris Stockwell. Eves was not initially a candidate, but was persuaded to join the race by senior Tories who felt none of the other candidates could win a provincial election. Witmer and Eves sought to distance the party from Harris's "Common Sense Revolution" agenda. Eves began his campaign with a speech in which he said he was neither left wing nor right wing. He later said that the government should not be giving tax credits to parents who send their children to private schools unless the schools teach the government curriculum. 2002 Quebec Provincial By-elections
Provincial by-elections were held in Quebec in 2002, on the following dates: April 15 Elections were held in the Quebec provincial electoral districts of Anjou, Saguenay and Viger. They resulted in the election of two Liberals and one ADQ Member to the National Assembly of Quebec. The Liberals unsurprisingly won clear victories in two Montreal-based districts: * Lise Thériault in Anjou; * Anna Mancuso in Viger. For the first time ever, an ADQ candidate other than Mario Dumont was sent to the National Assembly of Quebec: François Corriveau won the election in the district of Saguenay, one of the Parti Québécois's traditional strongholds. Corriveau's showing temporarily boosted the ADQ's poll numbers and led to another series of ADQ by-election victories two months later, on June 17, 2002. 2002 Winnipeg Municipal Election
The 2002 Winnipeg municipal election was held on 23 October 2002 to elect a mayor, councillors and school trustees in the city of Winnipeg. Glen Murray, the city's centre-left mayor, was re-elected to a second term over challenger Al Golden. Results Mayor Councillors *Greg Bozyk was a sales representative for a security company at the time of the election. He indicated that he was putting $10,000 of his personal savings into the campaign. Boyzk supported budget increases for police and firefighters. 2002 Bromont Municipal Election
The 2002 Bromont municipal election took place on November 3, 2002, to elect a mayor and councillors in Bromont, Quebec. Incumbent mayor Pauline Quinlan was re-elected to a second mandate without difficulty. Results *Patrick Charbonneau is the son of former Cowansville mayor Jacques Charbonneau and the brother of Canadian Football League player Steve Charbonneau. Both Charbonneau and Brossard focused their campaigns on environmental concerns. Municipal elections in Canada fall within the jurisdiction of the various provinces and territories, who usually hold their municipal elections on the same date every two, three or four years, depending on the location. Each province has its own nomenclature for municipalities and some have local elections for unincorporated areas which are not technically municipalities. These entities can be called cities, towns, villages, townships, hamlets, parishes and, simply, municipalities, county municipalities, regional county municipalities, municipal districts, regional districts, counties, regional municipalities, specialized municipalities, district municipalities or rural municipalities.
